  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

That is awesome. God bless Oklahoma, as least for that one thing, but screw tornadoes. Oklahoma gets more tornadoes compared to Wisconsin. :) You would think that blue states would be the first to eliminate such a tax. In WI (purple state), there are no taxes on food, except for hot meals, highly sugared foods, and candies as far as I can tell.

Utah appears they might finally get rid of theirs this year, though I think to try and get rid of it they put in on the November ballot since the legislature couldn't agree to do it. Of course, the Utah Legislature also is putting their own initiative on the ballot -- they want to have the ability to re-write or even overturn ballot initiative passed by citizens.

While it is nice that Oklahoma is finally doing this, and it would be nice if Utah does, as well, the real question is why has it taken them so long?

I didn't realize there are states that still tax food items. Non food items and perhaps food with low nutritional value such as “junk foods” are usually taxed though.

Groceries have long been tax-exempt in California. Glad the red states are finally catching up, mostly.

Hawai'i & Illinois (and maybe Virginia) are the only blue states that tax groceries.

NY never had a grocery tax. What's more, non prescription meds and sanitary supplies are also non-taxed.
Sometimes the state eliminates its grocery tax but the cities and counties still charge their portion. You'll have to see.

This talk about tax-exemption made me realize that my state (Pennsylvania) is one of only FOUR states in the nation where clothing is tax-exempt. Not only that, our votes actually matter immensely in this (and almost every) election. God bless Pennsylvania!

Virginia is purple or blue, if I am not mistaken. But yeah, most of those states seem southern to me.

Within the last 30 years, it does seem that Virginia has gone blue, but it was red up through 2004. Over the last four election, the state has been blue.

God bless New Hampshire. No sales tax whatsoever, plus in that beautiful New England area. :)

Yeah but PA makes you go into a bar to buy beer, so nuts to that.

I don't drink beer, so it doesn't matter to me. But that's no longer true. Since 2016, you've been able to buy beer in gas stations and grocery stores in PA. Our local Sheetz gas station has a walk-in "Beer Cave".

Are the liquor licenses limited? Because I’m in PA at least a few times a year and haven’t come across it in grocery stores.

Will I still pay tax on groceries?

The short answer is probably. Local governments can still charge sales tax, although they have the option of mirroring state law.

Oklahoma City's sales tax remains 4.125%.

--

Craziness, the combined state and local taxes on groceries in Oklahoma City was close to 9%.

As I said, I don't drink, so I really don't care. But I'm sure all of your questions can be answered here.

It's good to see that Gov. Tim Walz' state, Minnesota, also exempts clothing from sales taxes. Once again showing that he is "for the people."
