  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

What bible do you trust most, and which one do you trust least?

For reading and prayer I like the RSV Catholic Editions best. The ESV Catholic edition is also rather good. For the liturgy I like the New Catholic Bible from the Catholic Truth Society best. And I dislike the NWT (New World Translation) most, but I also dislike The Message and the NET bible, and I think I will dislike the LSB (the one that John MacArthur's seminary created a few years ago).
What are your thoughts on the NRSV-CE? It is the newer version of the RSV-CE. :)

And yes, The Message is not that good in my opinion, and the other kinds of Bibles that are paraphrases.

I am currently using one as a marking bible, the NRSV reads well except for the strange gender-neutral choices they made and for using "mortal" when they want a substitute for "man" as in mankind. Some of their translation choices were not to my taste too.

Yeah, no Bible translation is perfect. Hey, at least the NRSV-CE does not use woke pronouns such as "they/them". In my lifetime, there will probably be some Bible translation from a progressive Christian denomination that would use woke terminology. God forbid that day will ever come to pass.

It is good that you use the NRSV-CE as a marking Bible, as the verses are perfect for study and devotionals. What is your favorite verse from the Septuagint?

That is alright. At least there are 7 books to choose from: Baruch, Judith, 1 and 2 Maccabees, Sirach, Tobit and Wisdom, each containing hundreds of verses. :)

My favorite book from these seven is Sirach, cos it contains a few of my favorite verses from the LXX.

I don't know if I would say trust, but I tend to rely on the NKJV. The ones I trust the least are the New World Translation of the JWs, The Message, and the KJV.
I like going to The Message occasionally to see what Peterson's interpretation of particular verse is.

I like the NASB because it is written in a more modern format and is very close to a literal translation without added interpretation which is one of the biggest things I dislike about the KJV. The KJV has too many interpretations inserted into it rather than just a literal translation from Hebrew or Greek to English. But probably the version I dislike the most would be the NWT New World Translation because it’s been intentionally interpreted incorrectly to support Jehovah’s Witness theology.

The NASB and the NKJV disappoint me because neither one has the deuterocanonical books available.

Is that what this thread is really about? The bibles that do and don't carry the apacrapha? I know Catholics like to point out as frequently as possible that their bible has all 73 books, while the protestant bible only has 66.

They weren’t considered inspired writings.
Protestants do not consider them to be canonical, Catholics do, and that is all I want to say on the topic. I like some translations better if they include all the books I consider to be inspired holy scripture.

I have read various reformers (Calvin, Komenský, Luther...) and they quite frequently quote books like Baruch, calling him a prophet and similar. The books were dropped only centuries later, by the British Bible Society (and followed later by other Bible societies). But they were originally considered inspired by protestants.

Some protestant churches do consider them inspired or if not inspired then at least as beneficial and worthy reading material for Christians.

No doubt there. There's plenty of edifying reading material that's not part of the Bible compilation but certainly goes well with it. The writings to stay away from of course are ones that are obviously counterfeit and go against all scripture. Or at least read them as being counterfeit.

Yes I apologize it’s was the Jews who didn’t consider them canonical, I confused them with the apocryphal books. My mistake it was late and my brains wasn’t functioning properly.

The best: NKJV, I like literalness in a bible. I like the old middle english also, but for reading the NKJV is better than the KJV

The least: about any other than is a more interpretation, though for though type, or worse yet, paraphrase.

For study: I use multiple translations and commentaries in a computer program to write out my own bible.
