  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

The authorities arrested someone for these horrific crimes and are beginning to build their case.

Hopefully they're not running any of these "justice reform" programs we're running here.

This is “the norm”, Bad Things Happen, Police make it go away.

Eh...perhaps it's the norm in the UK...I've seen a lot of backwards priorities though and I wonder if the mobs are an indication that many are fed up with which crimes are pursued and which aren't.

Now the courts in England are generally pretty quick to indict suspected criminals so, we’re again, being told that normal, standard, everyday fare is “wrong”.

I'm not sure who is telling you that....

If you got that from my post....look closely....and note I was referring to this....

Residents in Southport have expressed their disgust and dismay after rioters tore down walls and smashed cars while attacking police officers shortly after a peaceful vigil to remember the young victims of Monday’s attack.

I’m near certain that “A Clockwork Orange”, is fiction.

“People Mad that Bad Thing happened, do more bad things” is a common reaction to horrifically (if only tangentially touched by) violent events.

Get a large group of people angry enough to go out into the streets to voice that anger and “hilarity ensues”, as TVTropes would say it.

"Channel 3 named the suspect as Ali-Al-Shakati, an asylum-seeker who arrived in the UK by boat last year. He was reportedly "on the MI6 watch list and known to Liverpool mental health services."

Until Channel 3 offers a detailed report on how their description was so inaccurate, minus the age, I refuse to believe it was all made up by channel 3.
This is not a good stance to take.

Ana, the UK police do NOT name under 18 suspects. Ever.
I can assure you those who know the suspects family are also not naming anyone. In the UK it is the child who has rights to have their needs protected by law. Hence the none naming of those injured as well as the none naming of the suspect. To do so would be prejudicial to a later fair trial. Our courts are not sources of public titillating entertainment and the right to a fair trail is part of our judicial process. A UK journalist who publishes a child’s name could expect to be arrested. Be wise and critical if a none UK police source claims to know the name before a court trial has been heard and any conviction reached.

Only if they are convicted by due process of law and only if a judge rules it to be in the public interest once a conviction has been passed might an under 18 year old be named. The UKs Children‘s Act is a very fierce bit of legislation and every organisation and everyone has to abide by it or face very serious repercussions.

The suspect has now been charged with three acts of murder and ten attempted murders. This will include those who were seriously injured after they raced to protect those at risk of serious harm. There has been nothing reported of being unfit to stand trial as would be the case if a serious mental illness had been detected. This means the suspect will be remanded to an age suitable remand location pending a later trial. This may take 18 months or more to reach court due to the number of people killed and seriously hurt.

I don't get embarrassed, but probably UK people should be considering their media is like a circus show, putting out blatant lies, and their government doing cover ups.
This kind of false story is put out for a very specific reason by far right groups like the EDF to whip up a frenzy.

That rotter Andrew Tate also posted false information. What does that tell you?

As for the riotous mob, that had nothing to do with anger and distress in the local community and everything to do with the English Defence League, a byword here for xenophobic nazi inspired louts, deciding to travel in an hijack news coverage. The local community got up after the riot to support each other, they gathered to clear and clean and local builders gave their time and skills to help rebuild the damage and mess the louts from the EDL caused.

Southport murder accused named as Axel Rudakubana

Judge allows naming of 17-year-old boy charged with three counts of murder and 10 of attempted murder
Robyn Vinter North of England correspondent
Thu 1 Aug 2024 12.39 BST
A 17-year-old boy accused of murdering three girls at a Taylor Swift-themed dance class in Southport can be named as Axel Rudakubana.
Rudakubana is accused of murdering Alice Dasilva Aguiar, nine, Bebe King, six, and Elsie Dot Stancombe, seven, with a kitchen knife on Monday after entering the class on Hart Street in Southport, Merseyside.
Lifting the anonymity order at Liverpool crown court, Judge Andrew Menary KC said the unrest in parts of the country after the attack was one reason why it was in the public interest for his name to be released.
He said keeping the defendant’s anonymity in place ran the risk of “allowing others who are up to mischief to continue to spread disinformation in a vacuum”. {Guardian online]

I hope this settles the dispute. More than a hundred arrests [edit 16.27BST] have been made last night and this morning after co-ordinated disorder around the country. There is little doubt in anybody's mind here that the English Defence League is behind it.

As for Channel 3Now: everything about the story was made up. The lies were used to whip up disorder by neo-Nazis. I hope posters have learned from the experience.

Just to recap: Axel Rudakubana was born in Cardiff and lived just outside Southport. He was not an asylum seeker.

Southport murder accused named as Axel Rudakubana

Judge allows naming of 17-year-old boy charged with three counts of murder and 10 of attempted murder
Naming an under 18 year old suspect is highly unusual. The Judge said:

From the BBC News:
Inside the court room, the judge said an order preventing Rudakubana being named until his 18th birthday would have "little practical effect in terms of protecting the welfare of the defendant or his family".

Judge Andrew Menary said the "balance clearly comes down in favour of the public interest in allowing full reporting of these proceedings".

"Continuing to prevent full reporting at this stage has a disadvantage of allowing others up to mischief to continue to spread misinformation in a vacuum," the judge said.

Rudakubana is due to turn 18 next week.

(Similar details in the Guardian and Daily Mail)

I hope this settles the dispute. Hundreds of arrests have been made last night and this morning after co-ordinated disorder around the country. There is little doubt in anybody's mind here that the English Defence League is behind it.
Those who helped spread the initial story all carry some responsibility for encouraging this mob violence.

This shows the dangers of reacting too fast without checking. As any engineer can tell you, a system with very fast responses is in danger of becoming unstable.

Concur, with Wayeyeman. This has been copied from the BBCs rolling news update. the judge has ruled the defendant can be named as he turns 18 next week. I expect that the Criminal Prosecution Service will request an adult crown court case given the severity of the incident and public interest. Whilst I have not tracked confirmation reports the family are believed to be Christian. they are defiantly not Muslim. I sincerely hope this does not prove to be an incel related crime, a real cause for concern as those who identify as such tend to disengage from wider society and develop extreme misogynistic views that they act upon.
The names of the children injured will not be released. Two children have recovered enough to be released home. The other children are now being reported as having moved from critical to stable. Lets keep their families and the shocked family of Rudakubana in prayer.

[ Edited to add:Apologises to Hants UK, I must have been typing at almost the same time.]

People, dont fall for the first thing on the scene that happens to push your buttons.

We really should know better by now. Bad actors are out there trying (and lying) to get you worked up.

I don't know 100% for sure what's true or not. I need verifiable evidence saying the 17 year olds name is not Ali-Al-Shakati... For sure.

I need to know his identity isn't simply being covered up for legal reasons, being a minor.
Take a look at this.

Take a look at this.

I am not surprised. thought I saw 'RT' somewhere on the website when I first followed up on the original post, but later could not find it. RT (Russia Today) was banned from broadcasting in the UK after some egregious reporting (on the Salisbury Novochok poisoning case, I think).

From the same Mirror article:

But just two years ago, more professional videos emerged and in June last year, it set up its website which has been accused of sharing "racially motivated clickbait." The website has routinely changed its name and has gone by 'Fox3 Now' and 'Fox3 News' in a bid to copy other news organisations.
However, it appears to be using internet services in the US and is registered with an online company in Lithuania, but its privacy features hide its owner's identity. Last night, Channel3 Now issued an apology on its website for spreading lies about the attack and said it had "made sure that the team responsible for publishing this news is fired." The apology, however, contained several errors and is believed to have been written by an AI programme.

And the Dail Mail (online) has a similar claim:

quote:
A Russian-linked fake news website fuelled lies that sparked violent protests over the Southport stabbings. A Mail investigation traced the misinformation that spread like wildfire online, leading – 27 hours later – to an attack on a mosque and 53 police officers being injured as they tried to protect it. There were further ugly scenes last night as flares and glass bottles were thrown near Downing Street when protesters clashed with officers.

You should always check anything in the DailyMail with other sources. (the DM is on the right and tends to sensationalise)

The family have strong links with a local church. That is not being named as no one wants the EDL and related for a return visit.

As for if the suspect is, I leave that in Gods more capable hands to know. Anything else is human speculation and supposition.

Seems very likely given the church connection and Rwanda is supermajority Christian.
It fits in rather badly with the narrative the EDL and others have tried to create.

116 arrested in U.K. as violent far-right protests erupt over deadly stabbing

Demonstrations in cities like Liverpool, Hull and Bristol turned violent, prompting arrests. Misinformation [such a that found in the OP] about a knife attack in Southport, England, spurred far-right protests.

Demonstrations organized by far-right or anti-immigration groups over the stabbing in Southport, North West England, took place in cities across the country on Saturday, some of which were met with counterprotests.

While officials noted the right to lawful protest, many of the statements also condemned the violence, looting and arson by protesters on the streets and vowed punishment.
