  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Absolutely everyone needs to calm down. And if Olympic organizers find viewership is way down I hope they don't go home and kick their dogs. Not good for them to take out their frustrations on innocent parties.
They seem to be doing okay.

I hope you don't strangle your children in frustration.

Why is it not just another parody? Why are you so outraged at this one? It’s not even clear that this isn’t a direct depiction of Dionysus. There are many equivalent artworks of a feast with Dionysus at the center of a feast ( halo included). It seems that Da Vinci may have been painting an homage to a much older tradition.
So what of the excuse for using a painting of a pagan festival that is an obvious sick parody of the “Last Supper “ painting. The Divinci painting was done long before the “Festival of the gods “ painting. The parallels are obvious. Why should Christians be comforted by the excuse that it was a pagan god honored . The unity excuse is complete nonsense. There is no legitimate defense for this offensive display.

Luke 17:2
It were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and he cast into the sea, than that he should offend one of these little ones.

That is Jesus stating plainly that it would be better for offenders to die than face what will come if they added more offences. Putting children in those deviant and evil Olympics opening ceremony rituals as well as showing these to millions of God's children is offending His little ones. It is also Blasphemy and demon worship. No one is putting them in prison, on the contrary, more and more the laws are used against His people.
It is sad why no one is putting these folks in prison, or taking them off the air at least. Thomas Jolly might need to issue an apology, or risk offending us Christians.

I don't think there has been an excuse offered by Thomas Jolly - the opposite in fact. Jolly has stated in clear terms that the offending tableau was a deliberate choice to be inclusive. He said that France is a free country. He certainly won't be silenced by a bit of discomfort.

I am pretty certain that he has already offended some Christians - and he is certainly not apologetic about it.

We have heard from from some Christians who were offended, but the must many who weren't.

This inclusivity stuff has gone too far.

This idea puts a proportion of people 'beyond the pale'. I have encountered this exclusivity quite a lot on these forums.

What about the American Declaration of Independence?

Thomas Jefferson was one of the authors. His 'rough draft' had this:
We hold these truths to be sacred & undeniable; that all men are created equal & independent, that from that equal creation they derive rights inherent & inalienable, among which are the preservation of life, & liberty, & the pursuit of happiness {Wikipedia]
His co-authors amended the sentence to include 'endowed by their Creator'. I do not think that this changed the substance of the Declaration in the slightest.

Some think the idea came from John Locke and some from Jean-Jaques Rousseau:

. . . the highest perfection of intellectual nature lies in a careful and constant pursuit of true and solid happiness . . .

Is this pursuit to be limited to people who fit a certain definition, or should the concept be suited for everybody?

But if the event this outrage is manufactured about were put into perspective, how would the GOP get voters to vote against their best interests?

People that seek to motivate others through fear and anger almost never have peoples best interests at heart, but their own.

I do like the Declaration of Independence. So yes, I believe all of us are created equal, and we should include everybody. In fact, Galatians 3:28 says something along this line.

Galatians 3:28 (ESV): There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.

Gonna tell you something: I am bisexual, and have known this since my teenage years. Do I force it onto others? Nope. In fact, because everyone is forcing sexuality onto folks, my decision has been made to never ask a guy out, and continue to remain celibate unless married to a woman.

Yes, this guy is handsome (guys with dark hair are attractive), but so is this woman.

Le Festin des Dieux ("The Feast of the Gods") is owned by the state of France and hangs in a French museum. It certainly offers a closer connection to France (like Marie Antoinette and Gojira), unlike the Last Supper, which is stuck to a wall in Italy. Apollo, the central figure, is haloed. Dionysus/Bacchus is present.

Certainly the Last Supper is more world-famous and meme-able, and it's hard for me to believe the Olympic organizer could be unaware of the potential for both interpretations.

[ETA: I'm indebted to rebornfree's post in #242, someone who actually did what a lot of us probably didn't: watch the performance. It seems much more likely to me that any resemblance to any painting, living or dead, is entirely coincidental.]

Not good for them to take out their frustrations on innocent parties. Maybe some good can come out of this though. Maybe future hosts cities will take from this and learn and ask do they really want high viewership of the Games? If not they can continue on. If they do well then they have come to see what they better not do.
I think Christians severely over estimate how much influence they have. I deeply doubt the number of viewers will fall because some people don’t understand Greek mythology and the Olympics. I think this is a pretty uniquely American pearl-clutch.

Kicking their dog? What?
Yeah sure. Just calmly go to your TV and click on national sports events and forget about the Olympics this year. Nice to honor your athletes when they come home though. They worked hard to get their medals.
I’m not saying to not watch the Olympics. Celebrate the athletes, I think it’s great.

You have the same rights to happiness under your Constitution as anybody else. And I really hope you find it in your life.

The tableau did not force anything on to anybody. People were free to enjoy it , look away - or even disapprove. But there was no force involved.

On the matter of the pursuit of happiness:

Another possible source for the phrase is in the Commentaries on the Laws of England published by Sir William Blackstone, from 1765 to 1769, which are often cited in the laws of the United States.

Blackstone argues that God 'has so intimately connected, so inseparably interwoven the laws of eternal justice with the happiness of each individual, that the latter cannot be attained but by observing the former; and, if the former be punctually obeyed, it cannot but induce the latter. In consequence of which mutual connection of justice and human felicity, he has not perplexed the law of nature with a multitude of abstracted rules and precepts, referring merely to the fitness or unfitness of things, as some have vainly surmised; but has graciously reduced the rule of obedience to this one paternal precept, “that man should pursue his own true and substantial happiness.” This is the foundation of what we call ethics, or natural law . . .

I don't think the path to 'true and substantial happiness' of humans means treading the stony road of denying one's nature. But that is not a matter for anybody but yourself.

One video on youtube said that the leader of France (Macron) congratulated the guy for a job well done. It would not be the Satanist oriented folks going to jail. In the end of the world era we are told that all the world worships Satan and the leader of that day. THAT is where the world is headed.

Honestly, there is no defense needed. You are free to experience being offended. The artists are free to express themselves as they choose.
