  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Louisiana classrooms now required by law to display the Ten Commandments

The Text of the Bible that I use most often is different from every other Bible. This is true of many Bibles.
Have you ever compared texts? Thought about the differences
All Bibles printed in English are translations. The modern ones are copyrighted. it would stand to reason that there are variants in the translations.
Seems a casual attitude to take towards the Word of God. Especially the notion that the authority of a biblical text stems from its copyright.
Do you have a point?
"Teacher, how come these Ten Commandments aren't the same as the ones I learn about in church?"

House Bill 71, approved by state lawmakers last month, mandates that a poster-size display of the Ten Commandments with “large, easily readable font” be in every classroom at schools that receive state funding, from kindergarten through the university level.

The legislation specifies the exact language that must be printed on the classroom displays and outlines that the text of the Ten Commandments must be the central focus of the poster or framed document.

In a joint statement prior to the governor’s approval of the measure, the American Civil Liberties Union, the American Civil Liberties Union of Louisiana, Americans United for Separation of Church and State and the Freedom from Religion Foundation said that the bill was “unconstitutional” and that “many faith-based and civil-rights organizations oppose this measure because it violates students’ and families’ fundamental right to religious freedom.”

From the Bill:

The Ten Commandments
I AM the LORD thy God.
Thou shalt have no other gods before me. Thou shalt not make to thyself any graven images.
Thou shalt not take the Name of the Lord thy God in vain.
Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.
Honor thy father and thy mother, that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.
Thou shalt not kill.
Thou shalt not commit adultery.
Thou shalt not steal.
Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.
Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's house.
Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his cattle, nor anything that is thy neighbor's."
I could care less about this. Kids should never be forced to read it. But when kids are being taught this. Or see this. Then witness our leaders or family members doing differently. They will get bitter. And ignore it.

We had some very interesting discussions. She also had a Masters degree, and she was a few credits away from two more Masters degrees in other fields. She had a wealth of knowledge. She quit a high paying Engineering job on principle; when she found out that she was building weapons that were killing women and children.

She had a very attractive brain; but I digress.

She taught me a little bit about Constitutional Law.

You sound well matched and her intelligence is impressive. That brings an element of richness to your discourse that's delightful.

Medicine was my first love and I wanted to be a surgeon. But an illness required me to give it up reluctantly. I went to finance instead and landed in the right place. But you can only go so far. There comes a point when you'll learn what you shouldn't and see behind the money to your detriment.

I did some consulting projects and liked it a lot and considered venture capital. But I soured on them after reading a book on Thomas Kinkade. He was an alcoholic but vc destroyed him. They'll have you dancing continually. You never stop performing.

Fashion is a different animal. There's a lot of exploitation that's troubling. It's had a significant impact on my philosophy and what I want to do in return. While I don't discuss the scandals I respond to them nonetheless. Balenciaga had me furious and I didn't buy their stuff beforehand. I don't watch the shows and wouldn't attend either. You can't lend your name to things like that.

I'm boycotting Chanel over the creative director. She gave them 30 years and produced 10 collections a year and they wanted to add another. When she advised them otherwise they called her a fast fashion designer and gave her five minutes to leave. That's the epitome of insult but she didn't leave alone. Her team followed her and the others submitted their notice.

It takes 2 years to make a collection and I wouldn't have done 10. The pace is unsustainable and they're burning people out. Because they're seduced by the profits. It doesn't cost much to make that stuff and will be even less when the robots are doing it for them. But they're not going to lower the prices. That's a job crisis in the making for several countries.

Ethics is the issue we're confronting in years to come. You'll know where everybody stands.

The natural world - and thing things we make from it - seem so much more substantial than law.

Otoh I do like exploring the philosophical principles behind social constructions such as govt constitutions.

Medicine is wonderful and there's something to learn everyday. But I've changed a lot since that time and prefer non invasive methods and natural remedies. I don't need to be Sebi number two. The pharmaceutical machine is strong.

I've noticed the philosophical bend in your posts. What attracted you to it?

ooh. Good question. I guess I see so much dispute, even within myself, about what is likely real and whats likely projected onto reality to satisfy personal preference, or about whats real and whats assumed based on our constricted pov. A philosophical bent is just an ongoing noticing of that conflict.

That is why I study Hebrew.

I don't take it casually; and I didn't say that the authority stems from a copyright; nor do I recognize the authority of an errant translator. I take it as a matter of fact. That is why I study Hebrew.
"Teacher, how come these Ten Commandments aren't the same as the ones I learn about in church?"
Call no man teacher; for one is your teacher. The ones in your church are most likely not exactly the same as the ones written in Ancient Hebrew; and even the manuscripts kept by the Zadokites contained variants. They are more likely a translation, based on the doctrine of your church.

Here's the news:

My point is that the information has already been posted here. Your "skeptical" act is not compelling.

Your point?
That the sourcing of the 10 command given by the Louisiana law is evident and has been clearly presented to you. The answer is available to you if you actual pay attention to what was written.
Skeptical?
No, that wasn't the right word. You have exhibited no desire to obtain information or knowledge on this topic, only to assert your opinion without evidence. I see nothing but pretense to inquiry as evidenced by post #278 where you seem to deliberately equate the answer to he question "which version of the 10 com.?" (the Frat. Order of Eagles) as if the F.O.E. was some sort of bible.

I think our point is that nobody knows what, if anything, you're trying to defend at this point, so your recent posts just read as random smoke bombs that no one is really obliged to address.

Do you understand that the words "belief," and "freedom," are two completely different words?
A distinction without a difference. Talking about freedom to express beliefs is meaningless for things which don't have beliefs in the first place.

I do pay attention to what is written. Now if you've been paying attention; maybe you can answer how the the Ancient Hebrew compares to "every other" English translation. I think that it would be wise to let the person who dug this bunny hole to answer that question.

It's a collective point now? Looks like speculation on your part.

If you read for context; maybe you would understand the difference.

Nobody is comparing ancient Hebrew to "every other" English translation, There are various English translations regarded as more or less authoritative by the various Christian denominations and these different slightly in their wording but none so much with each other as with this State version.
Call no man teacher; for one is your teacher. The ones in your church are most likely not exactly the same as the ones written in Ancient Hebrew; and even the manuscripts kept by the Zadokites contained variants. They are more likely a translation, based on the doctrine of your church.

.That would be your answer? What grade level do you think that is appropriate for?

The Louisiana law specifies the text in English. Ancient Hebrew is irrelevant.

This:
From the Bill:

Thou shalt not take the Name of the Lord thy God in vain.
Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.

Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.
Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's house.
Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his cattle, nor anything that is thy neighbor's."

Is not this:

Catechism of the Catholic Church

(read the "formula" column)

That's one major denomination excluded.

this State version.
That phrase should make everyone shudder. The Christians and Jews should be bothered that the state is specifying a version (possibly not like theirs) of their sacred text. The rest of us should be bother that the state is writing versions of religious texts outside our own tradition or at all.

Wrong.

If you go back and read the full context of the conversation; you should be able to see that it is of the utmost relevance.
