  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Louisiana classrooms now required by law to display the Ten Commandments

How's that?
The text in the Louisiana law matches the text from a Fraternal Order of Eagles monument. It doesn't seem to correspond to any published Bible text.
OK, I think i've more or less found the source of that specific text.

The monument in question was one that had been donated by the Fraternal Order of Eagles in 1961. I think it's the same as the version in this story.

This just pushes us back 60 years, for how and why the Eagles chose that formulation.

Do you have anything more than a vague reference, and an assumption?
Kentucky did the same things as Louisiana, and it was ruled unconstitutional in 1980. It's been mentioned several times in the thread.

My Grandmother used to tell me that I should be a Lawyer.

It was cute.
Elders are fond of doing that when they want to make you feel all special. ;)

Take out your own Bible and see.
Which one?

I have a better idea, than running down a bunny hole. How about you back up your bare assertion with some evidence?

No elders ever told me I should be a drummer. On the contrary, they told me to stop banging on things. I became a drummer anyway.

Well those little compliments can be a form of manipulation as well. Glad to see you did not fall for it. ;)

You enjoy debate as does @Hans Blaster. Dismantling is a great skill to have. ;-)

I used to want to be a corporate attorney. I worked for a friend of the family who had her own practice and began to ask ethical questions that led me elsewhere. She was a criminal lawyer and I asked about rape. That was the first nail in the coffin. I couldn't defend someone I knew was guilty.

Then I read about a scandal involving a merger that put employees in dire straits and it bothered me. I'm two down with one to go. The third occurred while taking a business law class. It was my favorite and I loved responding to cases. She was mentoring me and suggested I work at a local firm and asked if I had one in mind and said I did. It was the number one firm in the nation at that time and the third was here as well. I was going to apply to both and she was assisting.

The tipping point was the film Philadelphia. I was very conversant about aids and the way they treated him was horrible and I cried when I saw it. I remember thinking it was a movie until the ending and that's when they revealed it was based on a true story. Now I'm really crying. I couldn't fathom doing the things they did.

When I started to research the firm and pulled up the articles I saw one about a settlement and printed it out. The case they cited was the one from the film and that was it. I let it go and told myself I needed a career that wouldn't compromise my morality. It was the right decision.

Evidence of what? That it doesn't make any difference?

The text from the bill is in post #1. YOu can cross check that against the text of your bible (only three places to check )

The identification of the text on the FOE placed monument is in post #63 which you can compare to the bill text in post #1, or you red bible or whatever.

My Ex dropped out in the third year of law school. It takes three years to be a lawyer. She was close to getting her degree.

She studied Constitutional Law. She was a woman of principle. She wanted to help people. She wanted to make a difference.

She dropped out when she had learned enough; that she realized that the system is so broken and corrupt; that there is no fixing it.

She was very smart too.

Wow. I know it happens but it's always surprising. Thankfully I was in undergrad and switched to biology instead.

It's a difficult road when that's the case. You have to turn off your heart and overlook a lot. Some people can but I couldn't. I imagine you had some interesting discussions given your fervor.

The Text of the Bible that I use most often is different from every other Bible. This is true of many Bibles.

All Bibles printed in English are translations. The modern ones are copyrighted. it would stand to reason that there are variants in the translations.

Do you have a point?

We had some very interesting discussions. She also had a Masters degree in another field, and she was a few credits away from two more Masters degrees in other fields. She had a wealth of knowledge. She quit a high paying Engineering job on principle; when she found out that she was building weapons that were killing women and children.

She had a very attractive brain; but I digress.

She taught me a little bit about Constitutional Law.

The natural world - and thing things we make from it - seem so much more substantial than law.

Otoh I do like exploring the philosophical principles behind social constructions such as govt constitutions.
