Leftists beat far right in France’s snap parliamentary election

In a surprise result, the New Popular Front (NFP) — a cluster of several parties ranging from the far-left France Unbowed party to the more moderate Socialists and the Ecologists — won 182 seats in the National Assembly, making it the largest group but well short of the 289 required for an absolute majority. Macron’s centrist Ensemble alliance won 163 seats and Marine Le Pen’s far-right National Rally (RN) party and its allies won 143 seats.

There is much relief in France by the moderate centre too. My Paris friends were happily surprised by the result.

The National Rally is the offspring of the French National Front and is not much changed. It remains the vehicle for racists, xenophobes and Neo-Nazis.

The leftist coaltion in france is basically a huge complex of parties encompassing anything from the centre left Place Publique, the green party The Ecologists to the communist party. They aren't all far left, it's just a broad coalition that doesn't have too much in common except being left of Macrons party. Because of the french electoral system, those parties have banded together since they wouldn't stand any chance alone.

This is actually a pretty big problem now, because now those parties will have to decide on how to create their government, and will also have to work with Macrons party on any issues that need an absolute majority. Experts predict a pretty huge political chaos in the near future.

Then again, experts also prediced that the far right party would win, so what do they know?

Why? I think that Europeans are pretty satisfied with what you call left-wing marxism and have no plans to change it. Take Orban for example, often touted as a model of Christian Nationalist leadership. Has he relaxed Hungary's strict gun control? Eliminated universal health care? Dismantled their excellent public transportation network? Eliminated family leave and childcare benefits? Pulled out of NATO? What? What has he actually done for Hungary's conservatives?

It is a shame that they rioted because they hated democratic results when it doesn't bend according to their liking. This is not the first of such "protest". We are not blind we can see who rioted the most after the first round.

It only proves one thing to me, democracy only works when it favors me mentality is rife in Europe. No longer about the people's choice. It is my choice or prepare to be intimidated because I deem you as making the "WRONG" decision. We didn't end up have the whole of France burnt because the second round seem to favor the rioters.

And they have the galls to say democracy is under attack. The only people attacking democracy are those who said they are defending it. Kinda reminiscence of a certain political movement tactic during the second reich.

That is a false reading of the French situation. Actually a smooth(ish) transition of power is taking place, less violently antidemocratic than the scenes we witnessed in Washington (January 6th 2021).

French politics have been vigorous since before the Revolution. This is the Fifth Republic. The real danger to democracy was from National Rally, now as always the repository for such enemies of democracy as the nationalist Front National. The danger to democracy has receded, notwithstanding the unrest on the streets in cities where National Rally has been strongest and feelings are running high.

Interestingly, according to the number of votes, the right-wing National Association (RN) won overwhelmingly.

Marine Le Pen's movement received over 10 million votes from citizens in the second round of the election, i.e. three million more than the second left-wing coalition, the New People's Front (NFP).

Nevertheless, the RN finished third in the number of seats, because of the majoritarian electoral system and the strategy of its opponents.
