WASHINGTON, June 28 (Reuters) - The U.S. Supreme Court raised the legal bar on Friday for prosecutors pursuing obstruction charges in the federal election subversion case against Donald Trump and defendants involved in the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol.

The justices ruled 6-3 to throw out a lower court's decision that had allowed a charge of corruptly obstructing an official proceeding - congressional certification of President Joe Biden's 2020 victory over Trump that the rioters tried to block - against defendant Joseph Fischer, a former police officer.

The court, in the decision authored by Chief Justice John Roberts, took a narrow view of the obstruction statute, saying that prosecutors must show that a defendant "impaired the availability or integrity" of documents or other records related to an official proceeding - or attempted to do so.

The linked article is yet another article about a court decision that doesn't actually link to the court decision. Why do so many of them do that? But even if there's some reason they couldn't link to it (I don't see any outward links in the article, they all go to the same site, so maybe it's not allowed?), surely it would not have been that difficult to simply give the name somewhere in it, which is Fischer v. United States.

52 is the number that have been convicted of solely 18 USC 1512(c)(2). The ones that are currently in prison will almost certainly be released pending revaluation of the cases. If the DOJ can demonstrate to the judge that a specific defendant violated the current understanding of the statute, then the conviction will be sustained. I suspect some will have their convictions removed, but not all.
