Now that we're getting mixed messages from the Trump camp. I was wondering if people would care to stake their position pre-debate. Is Biden a doddering zombie or a debater of practiced ability? Which Biden will show up Thursday? Or is he both, like some Schrödinger's Biden?

"To hold simultaneously two opinions which cancelled out, knowing them to be contradictory and believing in both of them, to use logic against logic, ... to believe that democracy was impossible and that the Party was the guardian of democracy, to forget whatever it was necessary to forget, then to draw it back into memory again at the moment when it was needed, and then promptly to forget it again, and above all, to apply the same process to the process itself—that was the ultimate subtlety: consciously to induce unconsciousness, and then, once again, to become unconscious of the act of hypnosis you had just performed. Even to understand the word—doublethink—involved the use of doublethink.”

I expect the gaffe man to show up as usual. Maybe a little more stiff. Seasoned and professional and occasionally inserting his foot in his mouth. The next day he'll apologize and explain what he really meant to say.

An economist I respect, Robert Reich, has this fear:

One of Trump’s most successful ploys has been to frame the upcoming election as a contest between strength and weakness, and to convince many Americans that stridency and pugnacity are signs of strength while truth and humility signal weakness...
Donald Trump is the vilest by far. His loathsomeness extends to every aspect of his being — his continuous stream of lies, the eagerness with which he seeks to turn Americans against each other, his scapegoating of immigrants, his demeaning of women and the disabled. And his utter disrespect for the office of the presidency, for the laws of the land, for the United States Constitution...
A few days ago I was talking with a young conservative who admitted that Trump was an “odious thug,” in his words, but argued that America and the world had become such a mess that we need an odious thug as president.
“Think of Putin, Xi, Kim, Ali Khamenei, Netanyahu — they’re all odious thugs,” he said. “We need our own odious thug to stand up to them.”
I said that direct confrontation could lead to more bloodshed, even nuclear war.
He continued: “We need an odious thug to shake up Washington, stir up all the ossified bureaucracies now destroying America, do all the things no one has had the balls to do.” I winced. He charged: “We need someone to take control!” If America really believes we need an "odious thug" to shake things up, then the person who is most like an odious thug will win. For those of you who have this belief, why in the world do you think an "odious thug" would do a better job for America? I can't understand and never will.

Biden knows his job. More likely they are trying to predict how an unpredictable loose cannon will react. If he acts like a raging lunatic, I don't think ignoring it is the best solution. Better a strong rebuke and then moving on.
If Reich is right about misguided people wanting a pugnacious bully, you need to put him in his place.

I choose the middle one.

Good for an octogenarian, but sometimes vague, stumbling over words

As far as predictions it's hard to decide because it's all about the questioning.
I think we can expect questions about the border crisis, and either/both Ukraine and Gaza. Shouldn't that be substantive enough to predict how Biden will fare?

Despite the strawmen being thrown out here and there in the forums, they are not going to ask Biden what color his tie is.

No they'll probably ask Biden questions like "how good did it feel when you were able to make sure poor students loans were paid?".
Whereas with Trump it will be "as a convicted felon, with pending court cases, how is it fair to America for you to run for president? - credit to Tyrus (paraphrased).

Whatever their personal bias might be, these people are professionals. They know what a presidential debate should be like, and the kinds of questions that need to be asked of both sides.

Like I said, I predict questions on the border/immigration and Gaza/Ukraine. I would gladly wager on it.

I think my question is, will Trump show up for the debate? His campaign is complaining about the moderators, despite agreeing to it earlier -- some think this is the first step by Trump to provide cover for skipping the debate. I have to think he is worried Biden may perform well and that, if that happens, it will hurt the narrative of Biden being completely senile. The thought is Trump believes he shouldn't give Biden a chance to look Presidential in a debate, so he can more easily keep pushing the "Biden has dementia" narrative.

I would hope they would include the economy and spending. I won't predict what a man will say while in cognitive decline. I know this is about Biden but as far as Trump's tariffs which have been in the news, he's wrong.
