It’s 2024, we’ve had nearly eight (yea, LONG) years of vigorous and lively political discourse and everyone is tired, so we’re reduced to bumpersticker back-and-forth for a bit, from time to time.
Like sedentary exercise it keeps the joints limber without taxing the body (or brain) too much.

It's become a habit. It's devolved to basic instincts. 'Mungo says this bad!' That's what political debate sounds like these days. Can you actually remember a decent political discussion on this forum that actually talked in reasonable terms about a political policy?

The political frog has been boiled for so long that anyone under 50 has no idea what reasonable political arguments between two opposing views sounds like. The standard of discussion is at the lowest point that I have ever experienced in my many decades on this planet. And I am so frustrated that I am being dragged down to this level. I'm becoming part of the problem. If you keep having nonsensical arguments thrown at you constantly and, as you say, these bumper sticker level comments used as debating points it's so difficult not to respond in kind, dammit.

We're talking here about an ex presidents criminal conviction and how it might affect the upcoming election and you, for heaven knows what reason, bring in contributions to a terrorist organisation as some sort of argument and you accuse me of posting 'silly nonsense'?

But the thing is that we’re still capable of reasoned politcal discourse, except that this is harder than my team good your team evil, that has been the trend for some time because for some, this is the pinnacle of their skills…and it’s still sorta “fun”.

If you don't like the fact that you didn't address the point being made in the post you replied to getting pointed out, be better. Address what was being talked about. Give your own arguement as a counter to the previous poster saying that Trump caused that on himself with his own behaviour with your arguement. But you didn't. You gave a one liner that didn't address it at all, but essentially pushed a conspiracy theory (him being silenced).

It's kind of an offshoot of the "culture war" in the US that Russian trolls like to advance as well. Not meaning it was caused by them, but they will push it. And politicians will too, because it's easy to talk about trans people and safe spaces, and quite a bit harder to explain why the infrastructure isn't being fixed or something else, that takes longer than a few minutes to explain or is in such a big scope, that it'll take beyond an election cycle to show anything. "Owning the libs" is much easier.

I see people talking as if they're above those they're talking about, which they are are not. It's pretty easy to see what the true score is when people praise themselves while putting down others.

Politics is more difficult than it might seem, becuase most “problems” do not have easy, clear-cut courses of action and we end up lurching this way (and that) and meander forward one awkward and feeble step at a time. This is “normal” but lately it‘s like somehow suddenly bad, for some reason.
