  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Miami Meteorologists rebukes DeSantis for scrubbing climate change from state law

....Desantis must think Floridians are the most unobservant people on earth.

<excerpts>
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) signed a bill removing most references to climate change in state law, Steve MacLaughlin, a meteorologist for the NBC affiliate in Miami, could not restrain himself.

“As Florida is on fire, underwater and unaffordable, our state government is rolling back climate change legislation and language,” MacLaughlin wrote on X — the prelude to a passionate minute-long video explaining why he felt the measure was unwise.

“The world is looking to Florida to lead in climate change, and our government is saying that climate change is no longer the priority it once was,” MacLaughlin said in his vide
o, which was also posted on his station’s website.

In Miami, the past 10 days have seen four calendar-day records for high temperature and five for heat index, according to University of Miami meteorologist Brian McNoldy.
An analysis by Moody’s found that Florida faces the greatest economic risk from climate change of any U.S. state.

....meanwhile, as the water table rises, states like Florida are at risk of compromised septic tanks...

An estimated 120,000 septic systems remain in Miami-Dade County, their subterranean concrete boxes and drain fields a relic of the area’s feverish growth generations ago. Of those, the county estimated in 2018, about half are at risk of being “periodically compromised” during severe storms or particularly wet years.

Miami, where seas have risen six inches since 2010, offers a high-profile example of a predicament that parts of the southeast Atlantic and Gulf coasts are confronting — and one scientists say will become only more pervasive — as waters continue to rise.

I will accept the meteorologist statements based on how accurate the last three years of his forecasts are.

....or refer to Moody's Risk Assessment:

...and ask any Florida home insurance holder what has happened to their rates over the last few years.
Sadly, I think there may be a poster who has difficulty (or lack of interest) parsing out specific facts and would like be unwilling to read that much stuff.
I figure a picture will make it easier.

To a person who doesn't quite grasp Florida's tenuous situation due physical threats from weather patterns, I would see that document as bit of a gish gallup.

That said, I think that source if fantastic.

He needs to take efforts to reduce heat trapping gasses seriously.

At this point he probably should get really active about promoting nuclear energy for FL to replace gas fired elec generation. But instead hes just telegraphing that the whole thing is a non issue.
After the total failure of the VC Summer project and the Vogtle project being almost a decade behind schedule and $20 billion over budget nuclear is dead for a generation or more in the US. No utility is going to take that kind of risk.

That could be exactly why the involvement of a state governor could be helpful.

Vogtle reqired $12 billion in loan guarantees from the DOE, I don’t see a state governor getting that kind of money for the ultimate NIMBY project that is almost certainly going to result in rate increases for power as well.

I saw that. But I dont think that, in principle, safe nuclear power should be that expensive. We keep hearing about simpler, safer designs of late. And other countries manage to pull it off.

I'll admit I havent looked deeply into this.

Follow the money. That's the only thing behind global warming hysteria.

Thats makes no sense. There's tons of money behind the alternative too. Probably a lot more.

Regardless, reality exists regardless of human interests.

You need to look at who told you that was false.

Nobody told me. Look at it for yourself. What does it say? Answer: "We're all gonna die!"

And, let's think about it. Columbus sailed the ocean blue in 1492. He discovered a whole new world they didn't even know existed. And yet, they had the means to measure global average temperature with +/- 0.5 degrees Celcius well before then? Anyone believing this must have great faith.

Nuclear power is dirt cheap, 30-45 years after construction is complete and the loans are paid. Construction is ruinously expensive.

We keep hearing about simpler, safer designs of late. And other countries manage to pull it off.

We haven’t and as I said, no company is going to risk it. Why would they when they can get the same capacity from gas plants that can be built un a fraction of the time and cost with no public pushback to speak of?
I'll admit I havent looked deeply into this.
Nuclear is our only hope for green base load power, we’re not going to get it.

Your science teacher (presuming you're under 30) should lose their job if that's how you analyze.
I would also note that you described the chart as "demonstrably false", but in fact, only provided insinuation to question it's methodologies.

Anyone who thinks this misses the part where scientists have found other ways to measure temperature. They must not also understand EXACTLY what the blue space around the lines actually means.

The money that goes to the fossil fuel industries? The only hysteria seems to be over the possibility that human activities have contributed to climate change and that we may have to rely to different sources of energy in future.

You need to source that graph or delete it.

Lol, they taught real science when I was in school.

Lol, again. That's what "+/- 0.5 degrees Celcius" is. What are they teaching kids today?
