No reason for this to pass...
Just more effort for Republicans to disenfranchise folks
Not all Republicans support this, but the modern GOP lost the first part of its name (it is no longer grand). The Republicans in my state wanted to ban drop boxes for ballots, and did back in 2022. That hampers those with lack of transport from voting.

Once that they acknowledged that theirs was a minority party, the “rules” for voting got really important as a way to eliminate some of the voters who vote wrongly.
Funny, that.

In what ways was our country a fascist dictatorship from 2017 to 2021?
No, that's silly. It takes time to convert a country to authoritarianism. Even longer when there are many democratic institutions. 2017-2021 was a test period. Donald knows what didn't work last time. Next time he'll only have sycophants, yes men, and authoritarian activists in power. None of those squishy "normal republicans" or "adults in the room" next time around.

So the US will actually be a fascist dictatorship by 2029. What do you think will be some of the highlights of that will be?

First, the year 2029 won't have any particular meaning. There is no way trump will just give up his office in 4 years anyway.

There will be monitoring of the reproductive capacity of women as he give the "under his eye" crowd free reign to oppress locally. The streets will be filled with soldiers as he moves to deport all migrants. Then the economy will collapse due to a labor shortage and things get worse from there.

So cutting down on abortion and deporting a lot of the invaders Biden let in.

I find it interesting how the economy and the labor shortage has gotten worse rather than better since the huge invasion.

But none of that describes a fascist dictatorship though. Except the idea that an 83 year old man is going to maintain a perpetual presidency.

When did this invasion supposedly begin and by what metric has the economy gotten worse since then?

The number of invaders has grown each year and inflation is the worst it's been in 40 years. I'm sure there's a squiggly line chart showing things are wonderful, but people know what they're experiencing in day to day living. Even those in denial because the squiggly line says otherwise.

Huh, that's not what I'm experiencing in my day to day living. My wife and I, along with many of our friends, are making loads more money than we were a few years ago. Murder rates in my city are way down. Even the mosquitoes are down. My only real lingering issue is the fact that I have the immune system of an AIDS patient and my daughter is a walking petri dish who likes to cough in my face while wrestling with me, but it's hard to blame that on Biden, even if it does coincide with his election.

But I suppose I shouldn't have expected a serious answer.

I'm making more money too, but I'm also paying a lot more for goods and services. Can you explain why I'm seeing an increase of closed boarded up buildings when I drive around town? How are businesses closing down the sign of a good economy?

I’m paying more, too, but my increased earnings outpace my inflation-induced spending increases by huge margins.

Not having any idea where you live, I couldn’t say. Things aren’t getting boarded up here. What makes you think that’s indicative of a national phenomenon and not something more local to you?

How are businesses closing down the sign of a good economy?
You know, don’t you, that economic growth and prosperity isn’t distributed evenly, right? (that subject was part of what won Paul Krugman his Nobel) Even while the average is gaining, some places can still fail.

Right, some people like you aren't suffering more than they were four years ago, whereas many more throughout the nation have been increasingly with each passing year.

Since I don't think I could convince you that any phase of a state free-for-all to stop abortion would be "bad", I'll skip that and instead talk about Trump's deportation plan.

The first part is that he's not talking about the ones "Biden let in". Trump is planning the deportation of *all* "illegals" inside the US. This amounts to over 10 million people. The costs would be enormous.

How do you find and remove 10 million people inside our country? Well Trump plans to use the military, particularly the National Guard. This is a problem for several reasons. First, the National Guard works for the states, not the President. Second, use of the military for police work is explicitly forbidden by federal law (Posse Comitatus Act). Third, from a more practical view, the national guard has no experience doing police work.

I find it interesting how the economy and the labor shortage has gotten worse rather than better since the huge invasion.
Our economy has modest growth (a couple percent), mildly high inflation (4-5% annual, versus 2-3% for the prior decade), and low unemployment. The economy may not be perfect, but any "worsening" isn't all severe and is not tied temporally to changes in migration. (The causes are pretty clear and are largely tied to the aftershocks of the pandemic.)

The "illegals" include a large number of workers. That is the primary reason people come here illegally. Some do bring small children, but we are mostly talking about deporting workers. (There are no social services from the government for them.)

A mass deportation will remove millions of workers from the economy who not only do work, but spend money. There would be a severe labor shortage, especially in some areas where large numbers of undocumented workers work.

But none of that describes a fascist dictatorship though. Except the idea that an 83 year old man is going to maintain a perpetual presidency.
I'm sure some other fascist will wrest it from him. That's they way they work.
