Jan. 6 rioters the far right claimed were antifa keep getting unmasked as Trump supporters

"Suspected ANTIFA trying to break windows at the Capitol," wrote one Jan. 6 participant on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, in recent weeks, posting an old video that showed two black-clad men smashing at a window near the lower west tunnel, where some of the worst violence took place on Jan. 6.

This allegation wasn't entirely new. Video of the same two men had been circulated before, with claims that the black-clad duo were left-wing agitators. The rumors about the two men and other secret undercover antifa operatives began spreading on Jan. 6 itself, and were boosted by figures like Rep. Matt Gaetz. Some of the misinformation appears to have originated because other Jan. 6 participants who charged up the inauguration platform themselves appeared to believe that anyone wearing black — or anyone who would smash windows — were de facto members of antifa and couldn't possibly be Trump supporters.

One of the men was arrested just last month: William Lewis, a 57-year-old from Illinois who was charged with felony counts of assaulting officers and civil disorder. Lewis was wearing mostly black and used "what appears to be a baton" to smash in a Capitol window, the FBI charges. Lewis also deployed what appeared to be a can of wasp and hornet spray at officers on three separate occasions on Jan. 6, authorities charge. An NBC News review of Lewis' social media presence shows that he is a Trump supporter who disdains President Joe Biden.

The other black-clad man isn't antifa either. He's Jonathan Munafo — a man known as a "Front Row Joe" because he camped out to get prime viewing spots at Trump rallies all across the country in the lead-up to Jan. 6. [He got 33 months in prison for Jan 6 activities.]

[Another 'ANTIFA'] was previously charged for threatening a Democratic official in his home state, his Facebook profile currently features the words "MAGA 4 EVER GOD SAVE OUR REPUBLIC "

...

“I was going to be super hard and go punch a antifa terrorist in the face. And I end up being the terrorist," former West Virginia Councilman Eric Barber, later sentenced to 45 days in prison, said in his FBI interview. "Plot twist, huh?”

Which again makes me question, why -- if the rioters were Antifa agitators and the FBI -- did Trump wait 180 minutes to try and stop the riot, which he was watching on TV? And, why, did the rioters go home when Trump asked them to?

They really wanted to “sell it”?

Derrick Evans, a former member of the West Virginia state legislature, resigned his post after being arrested. He pleaded guilty, apologised in court, and served three months in prison.
Now he is running for a seat in the US House of Representatives
In a Christmas tweet, Evans posted a picture of a tree with ornaments depicting various Democratic leaders hanging by nooses.

The now-deleted image can be seen at @TheTNHoller

Evans has now posted this apology-ish:

Jan. 6 riot suspect revealed as Trump administration employee who praised Hitler: report

USA Today reported that Oliver Krvaric, who was working at the time as a "confidential assistant" for the Office of Personnel Management, can be seen in photos and videos crossing the threshold of the west door of the upper west terrace of the U.S. Capitol immediately ahead of far-right influencer "Baked Alaska."

“I was not in the Capitol," Krvaric told the newspaper. "I did not go into any offices, I didn’t wander the halls. I was not on the premises.”

A reporter asked if that meant he had not crossed the threshold of the building, which was enough for some participants to be charged. Krvaric asked what that meant, and he stopped responding to texts when sent a surveillance video appearing to show him inside the building.

Then there was the neo-Nazi message board he was apparently posting to and the "groyper" flag he was carrying. So much awful. (Oh, and his younger brother was outed as part of the "Patriot Front" white nationalist gang earlier.)

Republican loyalty to Trump, rioters climbs in 3 years after Jan. 6 attack

Three years after the Jan. 6 attack, Republicans are more sympathetic to those who stormed the U.S. Capitol and more likely to absolve Donald Trump of responsibility for the attack than they were in 2021, according to a Washington Post-University of Maryland poll.

In follow-up interviews, some said their views have changed because they now believe the riot was instigated by law enforcement to suppress political dissent — a baseless conspiracy theory that has been promoted heavily in right-wing media and by Trump in his speeches and in his legal fight against the four-count federal indictment he faces in D.C.

“From a historical perspective, these results would be chilling to many analysts,” said Michael J. Hanmer, director of the Center for Democracy and Civic Engagement at the University of Maryland.

Slightly fewer Republicans today (31 percent) say Biden’s election was legitimate compared with 2021 (39 percent).

Most Americans, 55 percent, believe the storming of the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, was “an attack on democracy that should never be forgotten,” [Among Republicans 24% and Trump voters 17%]

14% of Republicans think Trump bears responsibility for Jan 6, down from 27%.

“In the beginning when I heard about it, I was very upset that Trump didn’t come out and say, ‘Stop,’” said Gloria Bowden of Jacksonville, Fla., a 68-year-old independent voter who leans Republican. But now, having seen video clips of police using tear gas and rubber bullets on rioters, she thinks the attack was instigated by law enforcement.

criticism of Trump over the past three years has led her to empathize more with his reluctance to intervene during the riot. “The man had been through so much in four years that at one point you finally say, ‘Let them do it,’” she said.

['Oh that poor man. Why anyone might abdicate their responsibilities as the president of the United States.']

About 7 in 10 Americans believe Trump will not concede if he loses in 2024 (compared to 33% for Biden)

'Storm the Capitol' Board Game Celebrates Jan. 6 Rioters

"Storm the Capitol — TrueAnon Edition" will be available for purchase beginning Saturday, which marks the third anniversary of the attack on the Capitol. The limited edition game, which is designed for 4 to 7 adult players and is being sold for $64.99, is based on the events that unfolded on January 6 and allows players to "Relive one of the funniest days in American history!"

The board game was created by the TrueAnon, a political podcast hosted by Brace Belden and Liz Franczak and produced by Yung Chomsky. As of Tuesday, it is the ninth-ranked podcast on Patreon.

One player will take the role of the Capitol police, whose goal is to prevent any of the patriot characters from getting 100 ballots before the 10th turn of the game, at which point the police character would win and certify Joe Biden's victory.

Why have I never seen any of these faces? These people have nothing to do with Jan 6th.
Don't look at me, I haven't attended even one Shen Yun performance.

‘How are we going to defend ourselves?’ Inside the Capitol during the Jan. 6 insurrection

Three years ago, [Los Angeles] Times reporter Sarah D. Wire wrote about her experience, typing it out on a cellphone from the House safe room. She was one of three reporters to make it inside.

Now, with the aid of time and surveillance footage recently made available by the House, along with additional firsthand accounts from Rep. Norma Torres (D-Pomona), Sen. John Boozman (R-Ark.) and freelance congressional correspondent Matt Laslo, Wire provides a more expansive view of what it was like inside the Capitol that day.

I knew there was going to be a massive protest in Washington on Jan. 6, 2021. Then-President Trump had been talking about it for weeks. I knew violence was likely.

But I worked inside the U.S. Capitol, the safest place on Earth, as I reminded my husband the night before — I was worried about the reporters who would be outside.

Senators and representatives counted the votes in alphabetical order of states. When they reached Arizona, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Rep. Paul Gosar (R-Ariz.) objected to recording the state’s 11 electoral votes. The House and Senate retired to their respective chambers to debate the objections.

My phone buzzed at 1:41 p.m. — I received a Capitol Police alert saying House office buildings had been locked down.

At 1:42 p.m., congressional correspondent Matt Laslo noticed Pence’s Secret Service detail in the hallway outside the Senate chamber. “You could feel their nervousness,” Laslo said.

The Capitol shook with the force of percussion grenades, and smoke rose above the crowd. At 2:11 p.m., Laslo recorded the rioters’ first breach of the Capitol, at the Senate-wing doors.

Officers scrambled to lock the chamber doors at 2:13 p.m.; Sen. Charles E. Grassley (R-Iowa), third in line for the presidency, was pulled out of the chamber one minute later.

Torres received a text at 2:18 p.m.: “Capitol: Internal security threat: move inside office/lock doors, seek cover and remain silent. USCP.”

Rep. Ruben Gallego (D-Ariz.), a former combat Marine, stood on a table and yelled instructions to other members on how to use the [air filtration] hoods.

Police began to escort lawmakers off the House floor through the Speaker’s lobby. Representatives in the gallery were told to get on their hands and knees and crawl.

A few lawmakers still on the floor assisted plainclothes officers in shoving a bookcasein front of the chamber’s main entry — the same one the president passes through for the State of the Union address.

The Secret Service rushed Pence out of the Senate and down a private set of stairs at 2:25 p.m.

Staff members carried large boxes full of electoral votes, preventing rioters from gaining control of the official records sent by the states declaring which candidate received the most votes.

Two floors above [the escaping senators in the tunnels], at 2:44 p.m., the first rioter reached the door Pence used to escape from the Senate.

In a burst of strength, the crowd shoved police officers backward until they reached the main House chamber doors at 2:36 p.m.

The glass on the main doors began to crack and shattered. I peeked over a chair into the chamber as then-Rep. Markwayne Mullin (R-Okla.) attempted to reason with the rioters who were trying to push their way in.

The gunshot [that killed Ashli Babbitt as she crawled through a hole in the glass] and the tear gas immediately quieted the crowd.

“Can I do the hardest part of my job and ask you what you are thinking right now?” I asked [Rep. Torres].

“It’s horrible that this is America, this is the United States of America, and this is what we have to go through because Trump has called homegrown terrorists to come to the Capitol and invalidate people’s votes,” she replied.

A quarter of Americans believe FBI instigated Jan. 6, Post-UMD poll finds

Among Trump voters, the response rises to 44%.

The results confirm that misinformation about Jan. 6 is widespread as the United States heads into a presidential election year, during a campaign in which the former president and leading 2024 Republican candidate Donald Trump has repeatedly expressed support for those who participated in the insurrection.

“The people that went there to express their views, to support Trump, were peaceful,” said Richard Baum, 61, an independent voter from Odessa, Tex. “The government implants were the violent ones: the FBI, the police people that were put in there, the antifa and BLM hired by George Soros; everybody knows that.”

Q: Do you think it is true or false that FBI operatives organized and encouraged the attack on the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021? (If true:) Do you think there is solid evidence of that, or is it your suspicion only? [silly smiley parser]

FBI organized, there is solid evidence 11%

FBI organized, but suspicion only 13

FBI did not organize 48

Not sure 26

No opinion/Skipped 2

[I gather that the sum of the top two answers are the 25% in the headline]

FBI captures three Jan. 6 fugitives at Florida ranch on the third anniversary of the Capitol attack

“The FBI executed three federal arrest warrants early this morning at a ranch in Groveland, Florida in Lake County,” the FBI Tampa Field Office said in a statement. “The subjects taken into custody are January 6 fugitives Jonathan Daniel Pollock, Olivia Michele Pollock, and Joseph Daniel Hutchinson III. The defendants are scheduled to appear in Federal Court in Ocala, Florida on Monday, January 8. No further details concerning their capture are available at this time.”

Jonathan Pollock has been at large since the summer of 2021, when he was indicted alongside his sister Olivia Pollock, Hutchinson and two others. Federal authorities said Hutchinson had been an employee at the Pollock family’s gun shop in Lakeland, Florida. Olivia Pollock and Hutchinson have been fugitives since the summer of 2023, when they failed to show up to their trials.

Here's their indictment (at least for now):

https://storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.uscourts.dcd.233018/gov.uscourts.dcd.233018.116.0_2.pdf

Their two non-fugitive co-defendants were found guilty last March. The five of them were quite a band of attackers. Jonathan Pollock was one of the most violent individual rioters. Here is the original charging document which details some of those attacks:

https://www.justice.gov/usao-dc/case-multi-defendant/file/1410336/download

I don't think they'll get released on bail after their hearing on monday (And I suspect fugitive from justice charges will eventually be added.)

Ax-handle wielding Proud Boy sentenced to 4.5 years in prison for Capitol riot

Ax-handle wielding Proud Boy sentenced to 4.5 years in prison for Capitol riot

WASHINGTON — A federal judge sentenced a member of the Kansas City Proud Boys who carried a wooden ax handle into the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6 to four-and-a-half years in prison Friday.
William “Billy” Chrestman, 49, of Olathe, Kansas, pleaded guilty last October to one count each of obstruction of an official proceeding and threatening a federal officer. Prosecutors had sought 63 months, or more than five years, behind bars for the U.S. Army veteran and second-degree member of the Proud Boys. In their sentencing memo, prosecutors described how Chrestman led fellow Proud Boys and others into the Capitol.

..

Once inside the building, Chrestman helped stop a security barrier from closing and prevented police from arresting another rioter.

...

He'll probably be out in about a year given that he's been under arrest for almost 3 years already.

Another* killer arrested:

Ex-soldier convicted of manslaughter for killing Iraqi civilian arrested on Jan. 6 charges

Edward Richmond Jr. of Louisiana is accused of assaulting law enforcement officers with a baton during the Capitol attack.

When deployed in Iraq, Richmond shot a cowherder named Muhamad Husain Kadir in the back of his head on Feb. 28, 2004, the Army said at the time, according to multiple news accounts. Richmond was convicted of voluntary manslaughter, according to a 2006 article in the Washington Post, and sentenced to three years, with a demotion in rank and a dishonorable discharge. His father had sought to clear his son's name, according to the Post.

*(Note: two other defendants drove drunk after their Jan 6th arrests and caused fatalities. Richmond is the first to have deliberately killed someone prior to crashing the Capitol.)

Ohio Man Found Guilty of Felony and Misdemeanor Charges Related to the Breach of the U.S. Capitol

William Dunfee, 58, of Frazeysburg, Ohio, was found guilty of two felony charges of obstruction of an official proceeding or aiding and abetting and civil disorder.

According to court documents, Dunfee, a pastor of the New Beginnings Ministry Warsaw, in Warsaw, Ohio, posted a video to social media on Dec. 27, 2020, via the Ministry’s Facebook page, telling his congregation that “The Government, the tyrants, the socialists, the Marxists, the progressives, the RINOs, they fear you. And they should. Our problem is we haven’t given them reason to fear us.” Later he stated, “As I said earlier in another previous sermon is this, they used to tell us, you know what, you settle your differences at the ballot. How did that work out for us? It’s not over.” He added, “January 4th through 6th … Are you ready?”

[On Jan 6th] Minutes later, at 1:44 p.m., Dunfee pushed a metal barricade against officers with the U.S. Capitol Police, who were attempting to hold the line. He pushed against the barricade a second time at approximately 1:58 p.m. He moved to the front of a crowd of rioters at the East Front entrance to the Capitol. Dunfee walked away from the East Front doors as others moved into the building, but he remained in the area. As rioters exited the building, one stated, “We did it. We shut ‘em all down. We did our job.” Dunfee responded, “Hallelujah,” and later told the crowd, “Mission accomplished.”

They keep arresting people...

Michael Haltom, Twitter reply guy, was the 17th person to enter the Capitol less than one minute after the initial breach (and through a broken window at that). Went on to kick an internal door and damage it. (Obstruction, Civil Disorder, Trespass, Property Damage) That night he replied to a tweet from the VP thanking the Capitol Police with "Judas, we hate you!". That'll go well for him at sentencing.

Some of them get kind of weird:

University City resident Jonathan Humphreys was also arrested by San Diego police after unregistered firearms, including at least one "ghost gun," was found in his possession during a search

The rioter in a coat and tie: FBI says San Diegan arrested 3 years after Capitol breach

At one point, the FBI said, Humphreys could be seen apparently leading a large group of people toward the Speaker of the House's office suite. One rioter kicked down the door and Humphreys and others filed in, the FBI said.

Less than 15 minutes later, Humphreys was inside the Capitol Rotunda smoking a cigarette, the FBI said. Then he joined a crowd pushing against Capitol Police officers who were ordering the crowd to back up, the FBI said. The moment was captured on an officer's body-worn camera.

The kicker for tonight, Andy Oliva-Lopez, seen spraying cops with irritant spray in widely distributed photograph and stories about unarrested Jan 6th suspects.

FBI arrests Jan. 6 rioter whose photo was featured in a Biden campaign ad

"Sedition hunters" who have aided in hundreds of Jan. 6 cases identified the Oregon man in a viral Capitol attack photo to the FBI more than 700 days ago.

By Ryan J. Reilly
WASHINGTON — A Jan. 6 rioter dubbed "Blue Plaid Sprayer" and identified by online sleuths more than two years ago was arrested in Oregon on Tuesday and charged with assaulting law enforcement officers with chemical spray as they protected the U.S. Capitol.

Andy Steven Oliva-Lopez, the FBI says, is the man prominently featured in an image snapped by a Getty photographer that has been frequently used in news articles in the three years since the attack on Jan. 6, 2021. The image — showing a person unleashing an orange chemical spray while wearing a blue plaid shirt, a helmet and a gas mask — was recently featured in a presentation by U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia, Matthew Graves, and it was also included in an ad for Joe Biden's 2024 presidential campaign.

Peter Navarro, a trade adviser to former President Donald J. Trump who helped lay plans to keep Mr. Trump in office after the 2020 election, was sentenced on Thursday to four months in prison for defying a subpoena from the House committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol.

Mr. Navarro, 74, was found guilty in September of two misdemeanor counts of criminal contempt of Congress. The judge overseeing the case, Amit P. Mehta, rejected Mr. Navarro’s primary defense: that Mr. Trump had personally directed him not to cooperate with the subpoena, and that he believed he was shielded by executive privilege.

“The words executive privilege are not magical incantations,” Judge Mehta said. “It’s just not, it’s not a get-out-of-jail-free card.”
