With no appropriations bill in sight, House GOP keeps kicking the can (otherwise government shutdown Oct 1st...Nov 17th...JanFeb...March...)

A government shutdown will not bring that about.
Transferring those responsibilities (minus the wasteful pork spending) to the private sector certainly would. A permanent shutdown of certain government agencies would be a great thing, even if it goes against the wishes of big-government types who make a living at power-grabbing.

If McCarthy brought it to a vote, it might well pass.

Rep. Don Bacon (R-Neb.), who represents a district President Biden won in 2020, said he would support the Senate’s legislation and that McCarthy should bring it to the floor “if that is the only option.”

“I don’t want a shutdown. I would support it,” he noted earlier.

If even a few other Republicans joined him, it would pass with the support of Democrats. McCarthy has control of whether the government shutdown happens this weekend, or at least gets kicked down the road to November.

It's actually joe biden that has that control. If the House passed something he didn't like, he would veto it and blame the Republicans for passing something he didn't like, such as no more billions for Ukraine.

First things first, we have to get past that if. Something, anything. The House doesn't seem able to function.

And then, of course, there is the Senate to consider, before we have to worry about what Joe might do.

IMO, there needs to be cuts across the entire federal govenment and (gasp) a tax increase to balance the budget and start bringing down our national debt. Alas, our Congress will never have the political will to make difficult choices.
I would vote for a candidate who said "I will not cut or raise taxes, I will not promise any thing other than to cut the cost and intrusiveness of the federal government."
Unfortunately, that candidate would be sabotaged by their own party, as well as the opposition, for slowing down the gravy train.

Taxes are going up for the middle-class in ‘26 anyways when the 2018 tax-cuts expire for most people.

I remain unconvinced it was a tax cut at all. Raise the standard deductible, reduce deductible itemized expenses . . . it's all a wash.

Tensions erupt between McCarthy and Gaetz at closed-door House GOP meeting as shutdown nears

GOP Rep. Matt Gaetz and Speaker Kevin McCarthy got into a testy exchange during the meeting, according to a source in the room. Gaetz stood up and confronted McCarthy about whether his allies were paying conservative influencers to bash Gaetz in social media posts – an allegation circulating on social media and one the speaker’s office has denied.

McCarthy’s response, according to the source in the room, was that he wouldn’t waste his time or money on Gaetz.

After the exchange, members in the room could be heard complaining about Gaetz, with one member calling him a “scumbag” and another saying “[Flame] off,” according to a third source in the room.

Sounds like a deal is imminent!

So then where is the talk about any of the democrats in either of those chambers doing anything? All we hear about is the Republicans, while the democrats seem to be able to sit idly by and watch as the MSM "journalists" attempt to paint everything as being the fault of Republicans.

You may recall Senate Majority Leader Schumer got a bipartisan CR through the Senate on a 76-22 vote. McCarthy will not allow it to be voted on in the House.

In the House, as a minority party, the Democrats can't do very much. McCarthy isn't going to bring any of their spending plans up for a vote either.

Speaker McCarthy is the only one who can bring things up for a vote. Maybe with an asterisk that any GOP member can call for a vote to vacate the Speaker's chair and a few other miscellaneous things.

President Biden has provided his budget for 2024. As always, the presidential budget is always just a suggestion, and it is the Congress that has to enact an actual budget. But his plan is there if McCarthy wants to put it up for a vote.

Certainly the House Democrats on the Budget Committee would be thrilled to put the President's budget up for a vote. It's been available for half a year.

House GOP hates Biden’s budget — but is still hunting for its own formula (March 11th!)

It's been 6 months and more. They have no formula.

The US electorate handed the keys to the House to the Republican Party in January of this year, and the GOP can't get it started.

I'm sure there are plenty of people who hate Biden's budget. Especially when it includes trillion dollar spending that has a name like "Infrastructure" when it is mainly a "Green New Deal" with a lie for a name.
I wouldn't trust anything with biden's name on it.

Of course! Nobody wants to be the one to vote against an infrastructure bill to keep our roads and bridges safe.
Too bad it was all a lie.
OK, so we're (now) agreed that this is not an impediment to Biden's current budget, because it was broadly popular and already (in the past) passed into law (even if it was all a lie).

Three outta four ain't bad. Just seven or eight to go.

House passes three more long-term spending bills, but agriculture bill fails

The House-approved measures would fund the departments of Defense, State and Homeland Security for fiscal year 2024.

Meanwhile, the House failed to pass a piece of legislation that would have funded the Department of Agriculture for a full year. Democrats were joined by more than 25 Republicans in voting against it — some of whom have raised concerns over [rightwing] abortion-related policies in the bill.

To avoid a government shutdown, the Senate and the House have to either pass the same version of 12 appropriations bills before Sunday — time has run out on that course of action — or agree on a deal to fund the government in the short term while they work on the longer-term funding measures.

McCarthy seems to be pivoting today to getting a 30 day continuing resolution.

Who is reponsbile for the Appropriation Bills...bills that as of yesterday, had yet to be presented to the House Floor for a vote?
[Hint: The House Leader and his party]
