  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

What Message Does The Proud Boys Heavy Sentencing Send?

Very little is written about this. There is a book called: "The Biology of Violence". By Debra Niehoff PhD.

Adrian Raine, criminologist and author of "The Anatomy of Violence: The Biological Roots of Crime," talks about how biology - in addition to social factors - affect whether or not someone will become a violent criminal, and why men are more likely commit homicidal crimes than women.

The nature vs. nurture debate centers on the contributions of genetics and environmental factors to human development.

Thanks for this. Yes I am well aware that everything humans do is first imagined in their brains before physical action is taken. But trying to understand or justify the Jan 6th mob actions as a fight or flight situation doesn't really fit. They walked into this knowing full well there would be a riot, and if the majority of did not know this then they were blindly following the directions of the real instigators, which were those involved in a seditious conspiracy crime. Their 'primitive' brain did not lead them to plan and initiate and attack on the government, their 'advanced' brain created the planning and logistics for the attack. I seriously doubt that many of these criminals have larger amygdalas as a defense to their actions. The 'primtive' brain can account for violence in the moments during the riot, (fight or flight) but not the planning.

In order to win a seditious conspiracy case, prosecutors have to prove that two or more people conspired to “overthrow, put down or to destroy by force” the U.S. government or bring war against it, or that they plotted to use force to oppose the authority of the government or to block the execution of a law.
Prosecutors did so to the satisfaction of at least two juries.

White man speaks with forked tongue. They claim we have the constitutional right to peaceful demonstration yet they hand out extreme prison time to anyone that takes them up on their offer to demonstrate. The most they should get is 5 years. 1 year should satisfy everyone. Most rioting charges are 180 days and $2000 fine.

Far to many people are put in prison and far to little is done to rehabilitate them. A lot of that is because Science has fallen short on understanding why people are violent and what to do about it. It goes back to the primitive brain and the hunter gather days. The advance brain has to learn how to control the primitive brain.
Is there a link to any article where someone who remained outside the capital, peacefully protesting was arrested or jailed? All the sentencing I have seen so far did not meet the above criteria.

The Proud Boys leader was sentenced to 22 years in prison for seditious conspiracy and other charges related to the U.S. Capitol breach. His co-defendants were previously sentenced in this matter with similar lengthy prison time.

What impact does these heavy sentencings have on far-right extremism? Or on anyone considering doing this sort of thing next time?

Is it a deterrent?
Dose it galvanize the base because they see it as overkill?
Or another message being sent?

I believe this will be used as an effective deterrent. Many of these guys were weeping in Court, them and their families begging for mercy. I believe these people are experiencing mega regrets, realizing they won't be with family and friends for years, and now they have to worry about prison life. I don't believe most think it was worth it, and neither will others after seeing the results. I also like the message it sends to other countries, we take attacks on our democracy very seriously.

I bet they will be out after a few years. The sentences are there to shock others from doing the same....

If a person plans and entreats someone else to commit murder, then sits at home while the murder is committed; are you implying they should not be charged?
You have proof of what you are implying?

Lost4words, Trump has already promised if elected he would pardon all those jailed due to the January 6 insurrection, so yes, they will be out very soon.

You have proof of what you are implying?
You are the one who stated there were people who were not at the capital but were charged. There are only a few scenarios where this is viable, conspiracy being the most likely. You provide the names of those charged, and I will find you the articles that indicate that they are likely charged with conspiracy rather than rioting or trespassing.

Conspiracy is still a crime even if you were not at the crime scene.

Only if they get pardoned. Federal sentencing requires prisoners complete 85% of their sentence before good behavior release.

Yes, general deterrence *is* part of the sentencing procedure as is deterrence for the defendant.

Ok, so your comment was baseless. I get it; moving on.
No bot baseless... but you want details from an outsider??? That sounds like you don't care either

And conspiracy should be a lesser crime than to take action.

Correct, but trump did not say all would be pardoned. That means some of them have no cash to give trump....LOL

That assumes 1) he gets elected and 2) he keeps his promise.

Is that not a different case?
So no evendence of what we are talking about.

Talk about Helter Skelter.
If a person plans and entreats someone else to commit murder, then sits at home while the murder is committed; are you implying they should not be charged?

You have proof of what you are implying?
Basically, you never answered the question. Will you answer the question?

You have proof of what you are implying?
To cut straight to the point, the jury's verdict is proof beyond a reasonable doubt.
