  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

No, not normal. He’s in obvious decline. Two of these freeze ups in a month and if you watch until the end, he has to be guided along and walks like Joe Biden.

It’s sad that these old folks are still being trotted out by opportunists and cling-to-power-at-all-costs family members and political operatives alike.

Feinstein, Fetterman, Schumer and Senator Penguin are all examples of this and there’s many
more
Once upon a time, political parties brought up proteges who would take their places. You could determine who the heirs apparent were, as they were placed into strategic positions on their way up.

Neither the DNC nor the GOP is doing that. When a field of candidates pops up, it's as though they didn't even realize these people existed. For instance, there certainly must be someone other than Biden to run in 2028...the DNC is not at all thinking about who that should be. They should be maneuvering that person (or a short list of persons) into the starting blocks right now.

Feinstein should clearly leave and be replaced but a) she is stubbornly refusing to do so and b) the GOP Senate leadership (read: McConnell) have made it clear that they will not allow her replacement to be seated on committees (in particular that the Dems won't be able to replace her seat on the Judiciary committee where her votes allow judges to proceed to the floor.)

Fetterman had a stroke and in his recovery has had some speach difficulties, but last I heard, he was recovering and not otherwise impaired. Certainly not in a way that would imply he needs to give up his office.

I have no idea what age or medical infirmity you think Chuck Schumer has. I am unaware of any.

I also have no idea who "Senator Penguin" is.

I think the dynamics between the two parties are a bit different here. From what I understand, the GOP does a better job of raising up noobs partly because they have a more established undergrad->grad/law school->politics/think tank/judiciary pipeline and partly because they have self-imposed term limits on committee assignments. Once Republicans legislators get term-limited from their committee seats, they have few options for advancement and are, therefore, incentivized to leave office, making way for newcomers. That process has been upended somewhat by the rise of Trump-ish populists and the abrogation of political power from the Republican party to third party orgs.

Dems, OTOH, don't really have that professional development pipeline, and don't have any term limits, so the incentives work in the other direction - the longer you stay in office, the more power and control you amass. Beyond that, Dems are just bad at politicking.

Capitol physician medically clears McConnell

“I have consulted with Leader McConnell and conferred with his neurology team. After evaluating yesterday’s incident, I have informed Leader McConnell that he is medically clear to continue with his schedule as planned,” Dr. Brian Monahan, the attending doctor for the Capitol, said in a statement released through McConnell’s office.

Why wouldn't we joke about this? People joke about health troubles of their political opponents all the time.

Remember this from Hillary Clintons presidential campaign?

The stress of a presidential campaign is nuts. When Romney and Obama were going head to head they had some moments, including Obama talking about "all 57 states". You could tell they were barely sleeping. And those 2 are relative children to who we have running now.

Glitch McConnell should step away gracefully. What is it about these folks that prevents them from doing so?

Pride? Lust for Power? Need for Prestige? Love of Money?

The only way to be rid of them is to vote them off the island. Every election cycle is a game of Survivor for the power mongers.

Does this have anything to do with the rise of the imperial presidency, or the general lack of interest in the public in having responsible government in Congress?

Both me and my brother have noted how being president seems to age people rapidly. We both noticed how Obama seemed to have aged alot during his presidency, for instance.

The sudden aging process of the presidency had been noted by many people before. I think Teddy Roosevelt was the only person who seemed not to be aged by a term in the White House.

I saw this on TikTok and thought “this is really mean”; I didn’t think I’d see it posted here.
