If you were running to be elected to the Senate and it was discovered that you had broken the law you would be arrested and prosecuted, so would I. There wouldn't be any waiting until after the elections to take you or me to trial. Why should Trump be any different?
If it were me and I was running to be your senator wouldn't you want to know that I wasn't guilty of breaking the law before you sent me to Congress?

Facebook spied on private messages of Americans who questioned 2020 election​

Facebook has been spying on the private messages and data of American users and reporting them to the FBI if they express anti-government or anti-authority sentiments — or question the 2020 election — according to sources within the Department of Justice.

Under the FBI collaboration operation, somebody at Facebook red-flagged these supposedly subversive private messages over the past 19 months and transmitted them in redacted form to the domestic terrorism operational unit at FBI headquarters in Washington, DC, without a subpoena.

I realize that's the narrative you want to believe....but the fact is: It doesn't matter if Trump had announced he was running or not. Jack Smith would have prosecuted Donald Trump. As he should.

Even if your characterization is true (as doubtful as that is), Garland's power in this case is pretty limited. He can bring charges against Trump, and present the evidence before the court...but it will be up to a judge and jury to decide if Trump is guilty of those charges.

If, as you seem to believe, Trump is not guilty of everything he's being accused of, then it's up to his legal team to convince the judge and jury. So, in the end, it's up to the judge and jury. Not the DA himself.

It's called due process. And that's something banana republics don't usually have.

So, the only thing Trump has to worry about is how good his legal team is.

He was investigated by the Senate and they said there was nothing illegal. The House is now investigating. If the Oversight Committee can come up with solid information they can bring that to the DOJ. That is how the DOJ investigation of Trump's part in J6 began, with the J6 Committee. They put together evidence and brought it to the DOJ.

IMO, the DOJ finally moved after the Jan 6th Congressional Committee's investigation and evidence of wrong doing was too much to ignore any longer....

I think the "organizer" part of the Jan6 investigation was actually moved to the special counsel by the AG because *Biden* declared his candidacy. That when Donald Trump (one of the subjects of that investigation and a candidate for President since early 2021) became the chief rival of the AG's boss because the AG's boss was running for President as well, he isolated the investigation with the special counsel mechanism.
