  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

That's simple to repair. White people across the nation simply need to support tennis, swimming, and golf as much as they support football and basketball.
I lost the college sporting team I was on in 1981 because of Title IX. Teams that don't make money for the college are a liability. Money is what matters.

That is still discrimination. There is no equality, and if one cannot pay one cannot play. That is the conservative way.
If you cannot pay you need to find a way to better your situation. That equation should involve hard work, and not time spent crying about discrimination, which is the liberal way.

I Agree, universities are about $Money$ and that equates into let the low GPA sports star into college that will fill the stadium at $100 a seat, also the legacy admission students where parents donate to buildings, endowments, etc $Money$

It's all about $Money$

It is discrimination against everybody who is not a legacy and is not merit based, as simple as that.
Yes it is...but is it a problem? Just because it's discrimination doesn't mean it's a problem.

I run a small business, and I give some perks to repeat customers myself.

That's why I said the problem of so much money going to black-dominated sports--if it even is a problem--is solved by getting more public support for white-dominated sports.

As long as you don't have an issue with discrimination, then I don't care if you are discriminated against.

This thread had a clean up of off topic posts. The topic is the SCOTUS and affirmative action. It is not Hunter Biden.

Don't make me thread ban you.

Yes, but you didn't follow the money.

College football and basketball teams do make lots and lots of money (and yes, the athletes should benefit more than they do).

Please understand what colleges do with that money, For the most part, that money goes to support other college teams, many of whom wouldn't exist without the money that comes in from football and basketball. Certainly, the sports scholarships would be greatly reduced.

Are you happy to watch the dozens of other sports? Thank the football and basketball teams.

Sure, colleges could focus more on education and not give scholarships to sports players. IMO, that would NOT benefit the college as a whole. I support the idea of college students being able to choose from a large number of sports programs.

Do sports scholarships affect other scholarship? Aren't sports scholarships completely funded by the sports programs?

Top students who are top athletes do not require non-sports scholarships. The schools can use the money for other things. So, the school can recruit top players at all the minor sports without paying a dime in scholarships. The football and basketball teams have paid their way, in addition to paying for football and basketball players.
==========
So, for some schools there is one pot of money, the school's resources not coming from sports.

Other schools have two pots, their regular pot, plus the pot of sports money that funds ALL the different sports that the sports revue can support. Yes. I know that this isn't true for all schools. However, I think that it is true for schools that make top sports team a high priority so that they can fund more sports than it would be able to do without the money from football and basketball.

I support academics being the absolute determination and qualifying factor for college admissions

Yes that would exclude many sports stars that can't make the grades, and yes its about the $$$ so the low grades receive a blind eye in many cases

IOW, athletic scholarships are generally not even part of this discussion.
