A Theory in the sciences is the explanation for the observations (the facts). A theory is testable and falsifiable (as in, it has survived repeated attempts to overturn it), has explanatory power and is useful in making future predictions.

Cell Theory is an example. So is the Germ Theory of Disease. So is Mendel's Theory of Genetic Inheritance.

The theory of electricity is another.

Until a theory is proven falsifiable or non-falsifiable; it's still an opinion of what person X thinks a particular group of data means. If it's proven non-falsifiable; than it's considered a "fact".

Some "consistent groupings of data" are still considered "theories" because though we can prove them in one environment (example flight on earth) we can't prove that is consistent across all environments (Thus the exploration of alternate power sources to be used in space such as "solar sails".) So this is why "flight" in some contexts is still considered "theory" even though it can be replicated on earth.

Part of (for example) "flight theory" is based on the assumption that certain aspects of physics are consistent across all environments. But that may not be the case. Thus to say "I think this is why this set of data does this thing in this environment."; is still an "opinion". Someone else will say "I think this set of data does this thing in this environment for (a different reason)." (The example of flight again. There are certain things that can fly; we can observe they can fly, but we can't explain how they can fly because they don't fit our current understanding of aerodynamics. Thus there is "opinion X" on flight theory and "opinion Y" on flight theory.)

Both are still opinions; because there contains unknown factors in the question. That's why they are called "theories".

Anyone with a telescope and spectrograph can observe the same phenomena; but mere observation doesn't tell you what the composition of the comet's tail is.

You do need to understand the spectral properties of the various molecules and dust particles. You could build a lab to measure them, or (and this is the shocking part), you could trust the integrity of those who took the water spectrum in the lab and published them. This kind of hyper-pseudo skepticism isn't really useful.

But Anthony Fauci "is the science" - right?

It took away their freedom.

People vacated Hinduism in droves and embraced Buddhism.

Imagine wanting to be a merchant, but you couldn't because you were born into the warrior caste, and had to be trained up as such?

Or wanting to be a warrior and join the army, but couldn't because you were born into the peasant caste, and had to be treated as such?

Or ... worst of all ... being born as an Untouchable?

If you've never walked past an Untouchable begging for bread, is it perchance because you live in this Christian nation, where people are free?

I've been at work so other's have beaten me to it, but a theory, when used in science and with reference to science, is an explanation of the facts.
