  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Well it looks like I’ll be attending a Baptist church with my mom soon.

Not that I’m leaving the RCC but my mom started out Baptist and wants to check this little country Church out. It’s the closest church to where I live out in the woods. I feel it’s the right thing to do. What do you think?

For her sake I guess it makes sense, just don't let them push you around or insult you if they find out your Catholic. I don't envy you, baptists are the one sect I'm the most prejudiced against. I think it was bred into me by my mom.

Yeah. I’m trying to be optimistic but I will also be on my guard as well. I’ll try to be a good witness for Catholics should the issue come up.

I suppose that's the best any of us can do. Who knows, maybe some such scenario will unfold where you pique the curiosity of someone there and they decide they wanna explore Catholicism more with an open mind and open heart, or maybe the whole thing will pass without incident lol.

I've been a visitor to non-Catholic churches. It was ok, but I missed the Eucharist and confession. I don't think it's wrong to visit, but I, myself, wouldn't join.

I have no plans of joining. This is just for my mother’s benefit.

I see. Then, I would have no problem visiting. I've done that with a few different churches (and even a Kingdom Hall  ).

It's very kind of you to do that for your Mom.
Have you been to a Baptist church before?

I was Baptist for a few years ... Southern Baptist.
But not all Baptist churches are the same, and maybe you already know that?

I mention that ^ because it's hard to know what 'kind' of Baptists will be at this country church.
But the ones I know are very nice, friendly, God loving people.

If you go regularly with your Mom, I think you can expect to eventually 'sense' some pressure 'to convert'.
In general, I would not expect a Baptist to be drawn to Catholicism, but they may come to see Catholics as nice people,
thru their exposure to you.

If you dare, do a big genuflection on entering the pew. Or if they have a baptistery with water in it, dip your hand in and do a sign of the cross.

I know. There is nothing there to genuflect to. And it would be like dropping a gauntlet. Maybe not smart. Just fun to think about when it passed into my skull.

Is your mom dead set against entering a Catholic Church. I get it you want to do what you can to accommodate her. That’s natural. Could she accommodate you?

Oh yes. I have been to. Baptist churches before among others. And it’s true that all are different. I’ll be sure to post when we go.

Mom would get absolutely nothing out of a Catholic Church as she would from a Baptist Church. Mom went with me once to my Church and she never went again.

As long as you keep going to Mass and remain faithful to the Catholic Faith, I see no problem with taking your mom to a Baptist church. :)

But, I would keep a low profile about being Catholic until you get the "lay of the land", so to speak. Some Baptist sects are more tolerant than others.

Yeah I’m just going to feel it out. But I’m no stranger to Protestant churches so I’m not too nervous.

Christ leads we follow.

If Christ is calling your mother to the Baptist Church, she will find peace there and join them.
If it is not His will for her, she may join, but not have peace in it.

Who we are is how we pray. Not every person is comfortable with the same form of worship.
Our personality often draws us toward a particular prayer style. It's what convinced me on why
there are so many different denominations in the world.

Catholicism is deep and people are drawn toward a more quiet contemplative form of prayer.
It's not for everyone and it doesn't mean that we're good and they're wrong.
