  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

This case filed in NY yesterday, 5/15/23, by an employee of Rudy Giulani for the following reasons:

"This lawsuit arises from unlawful abuses of power, wide-ranging sexual assault and harassment, wage theft, and other misconduct by Rudolph W. Giuliani and his Companies"
In that lawsuit one can read text messages by Rudy clearly enacting sexual harassment, however in this case we read this nugget:

"132. He also asked Ms. Dunphy if she knew anyone in need of a pardon, telling her that he was selling pardons for $2 million, which he and President Trump would split. He told Ms. Dunphy that she could refer individuals seeking pardons to him, so long as they did not go through “the normal channels” of the Office of the Pardon Attorney, because correspondence going to that office would be subject to disclosure under the Freedom of Information Act."
Now granted with Rudy it's kind of hard to tell if that was him, or the scotch talking in his scheme towards Ms Dunphy, but surely if Rudy were Hunter Biden and Trump his father Joe, Comer and Jordan would be all over this. With that said, I don't think it would be beyond the pale to imagine something like this between Rudy and Trump, who has no sense of right and wrong if he stands to personally benefit. Personally given the way Trump did abuse the pardon process, this needs a looked at and legislation passed so ALL pardons go through the pardon process and reel in the abuses enacted by Trump.

Trump has already publically stated that he intends to pardon some of the Jan. 6th criminals.

If the allegation about selling pardons is true, then it was even worse than I had supposed.

If any pardons were bought and sold, would they then be void?

This from the New York Times 2021:
"A onetime top adviser to the Trump campaign was paid $50,000 to help seek a pardon for John Kiriakou, a former C.I.A. officer convicted of illegally disclosing classified information, and agreed to a $50,000 bonus if the president granted it, according to a copy of an agreement.
And Mr. Kiriakou was separately told that Mr. Trump’s personal lawyer Rudolph W. Giuliani could help him secure a pardon for $2 million. Mr. Kiriakou rejected the offer, but an associate, fearing that Mr. Giuliani was illegally selling pardons, alerted the F.B.I. Mr. Giuliani challenged this characterization."
The same plot. The same amount. Again, hard to tell if this was a real thing, or the Glenlivet Scotch speaking.

Lets play rumor and then after that we can play, if it is true, but even if there is no basis in fact for it lets just insist Trump is guilty because after all we just do not like him and we are looking for reasons, any reason, even if we have to make up the reason.

And after we hear the audiotapes you'll say "No, he meant he was going to brush her hair".

Did you read post #1, Trump obviously does not need to be named.

What specific pardons do you consider to be abuses?

I don't assume Trump is guilty of this. First, there is the question if this is actually true or if this is an employee -- particularly if Giuliani tried to harass her -- trying to "get back" at her former boss. Even if this is true, it could have been something Giuliani was doing on his own, without Trump's knowledge. I find that part doubtful but it is possible and would need to be proven -- something that may be tough to prove, even if it did happen. And, to be clear, I find it doubtful because Rudi doesn't seem like the type to do this if he didn't have Trump's permission.

I do hope, since similar allegations occurred in 2021, that this is something the FBI is already investigating.

I'd argue there was pretty clear abuse of the Presidential pardon process when it came to Trump's friends, political allies, loyal henchmen. He typically sidestepped the official review process in those instance. Also in a number of cases involving high profile Republican donors abd pardons for Republicans convicted of campaign finance violations and/or corruption involving public funds.

I'd propose this list for a start:

Mike Flynn
Roger Stone
Paul Manfort
Charles Kushner
Dinesh D'Souza
Joe Arpaio
Conrad Black
Duncan Hunter
Steve Bannon
George Papadopoulos

Do you really think this sort of childish shtick is in any way conducive to a productive conversation? I get that it's really popular among Conservisphere talking heads and callers to right wing talk radio stations, but we're actually trying to have an adult conversation here.

Probably all of the one's for which Rudy was paid $2 million to split with Donald. If there was none, good. If there were any, that's very bad.

We could discuss that if we did in fact hear the tapes.
My point is, what would we need to discuss? Either Giuliani ends up saying these things or he doesn't. If he does there's nothing to discuss. If he doesn't I withdraw my argument

My point that you missed was that even if he clearly does say those things we'll hear people make up some ridiculous translation not based on reality or what was said.

Glenlivet is only 40% ABV, and a heavy drinker like Rudy wouldn't even notice it.

If there were none, isn't it still a crime for Rudy to attempt to sell them for a fee?

Probably but that alone is unlikely to be prosecuted. Besides which, he might be pre-pardoned. :)
