  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Barbee says the entire 5th-grade team at Winding Waters school in Hernando County have signed permission slips from parents allowing PG-rated movies to be shown. She says she was reported to the state department of education for "indoctrination" and is under investigation for a possible violation of Florida's so-called "don't say gay" law, which bans teaching about gender and sexual identity in schools.

No points for guessing that it's about homosexuality.

So the character has a discussion about a crush they have on someone of the same sex.

I'm wondering if the teacher knew this. Was this just a mistake or a purposeful act to bring sexual identity into the classroom?

Is it about sexual identity if a straight character discusses their crush?

Well obviously, the only acceptable films will be those of paint drying, as anything involving people risks violating this florida law.
Oh I know right?. I mean every movie ever made has homosexual characters discussing their homosexual preferences. I can't think of any Disney movies that don't do that. Nor any PG rated movies unless it involves paint drying. It's just an impossible task.

ROFL! "What their kids are being exposed to".
What a crock of empty platitudes....while there have been DOZENS of school shootings this year.

As if a male character saying "I like boys" is lacivious and terrible.

It's so FUNNY how the party of free speech HATES speech so very very much.

The thing I dont know is whats the minimum age where its appropriate for any character to mention having a schoolkid crush on another character.

5th grade (~10 years old) is definitely old enough for that to be appropriate. That's when I had my first sex-ed class (at Catholic school, no less), and we read books like Bridge to Terabithia, which deals - in part - with an adolescent crush.

Jenna Barbee, who released a TikTok video telling her side of the story over the weekend, says she showed the movie while part of her class finished state testing, because she figured it was a way to give students a break after the morning of testing while their classmates weren't back yet, while also connecting to curriculum on earth science and ecosystems that they were studying.
...
I can't tell whether the teacher knew or not but it isn't the reason she gives for showing this particular movie.

Barbee says the entire 5th-grade team at Winding Waters school in Hernando County have signed permission slips from parents allowing PG-rated movies to be shown.
...
The Tallahassee Democrat names the school board member who reported Barbee as Shannon Rodriguez,

It's not clear to me if Shannon Rodriguez has a child in this class. If she does she signed a permission slip for PG movies.

PG movies are rated PG for a reason, they contain messaging that is above the General audience rating. Knowing this parents shouldn't complain if they agreed to allow their child to watch PG movies without having viewed the movie themselves.

If Ms. Rodriguez is worried maybe she should talk to the parents who gave their permission for PG movie viewing.

I'm having trouble seeing "indoctrination" into homosexuality here but I haven't watched it myself.
I can say that my 5th grader would not have had permission to watch a PG movie that I hadn't vetted.

Jess didn't even know Leslie loved him or that he loved her until after Leslie died.

True, but he did have a crush on the music teacher. And even if Jess doesn't fully comprehend his relationship with Leslie, it's something that's fairly obvious to the reader as the omniscient observer.

This honestly is a good test case on the laws. Does this actually violate the law or not. I dont know why so many of you are up in arms about this. This was bound to occur which is a good thing. This should help alleviate some questions.

Does this kind of thing meet the standard of educating children or is this age appropriate etc.

I know many of you didn't want a law at all. But they got one. Then you complained that teachers wouldn't be able to tell the kids what they did that weekend. Or that the law was too vague etc etc. Well here's a test case. Is it too vague? Was it it not clear?

Maybe you are all right. I guess we'll see.

I have to admit, under the law the teacher shouldn't be showing that movie to the kids.

It's a crummy law. It ostracizes a portion of the population, pretending that they don't exist. And it puts teachers in a very awkward position.

Here's another thing we seem to be missing. This teacher is NOT being investigated for violating the law as many seem to be indicating. This is a school district matter. She is not being investigated by any law enforcement or state agency at this point.

She violated school policy by showing this movie. According to the school

Administrators say the teacher did not seek proper permission to show the movie, while the teacher said the investigation is an "abuse of power,"

So it appears that the teacher violated the rules on getting proper permission. Which makes sense.

Barbie thought all she needed was the permission slips to show PG movies. At least that's her claim. But the policy is she has to get permission from the principal or administrators before showing a movie. And she didn't do that.

Instead of being contrite about it and simply apologizing for not following proper procedures the teacher went on the offense. Big mistake.

She should have just admitted she made a mistake and learned from it. The policy is in place for a reason. It protects the school, the teacher and the students. If she would have just followed policy she may or may not have gotten permission for the movie. If she did then the parent can blame the school principal or administrators. And if the school said no, then she wouldn't be under investigation and all would be well. But she violated the policy and because of this she's in the position she is now. Policies and procedures are there for a reason.
