It’s easy to give up on something if it has only offered you pain.
Like is a gift, and those who are blessed with it must learn how to overcome it's challenges. Challenges are good. We grow from them.

Not everyone on street drugs, even tranq, is a victim of life beating them down. There's a lot of homeless addicts who decide they like being stoned more than getting clean and having an ordinary lifestyle, even though that is something many could do. They give up on life in the sense that being stoned means more to them than anything else life has to offer. For them being stoned is like being in paradise

That is the bondage of drug addiction. People love it to their detriment. The guy in the video said he had not hit bottom yet.Well, I hope he decides that he does no want to hit the bottom.

I took down the video because he said a word not allowed on CF. And I know it's callous to say so, but he's an example of someone making a thought out decision to pursue being stoned.

You are right. That is the spirit of addiction operating in him. It has him in bondage.

Dunno about that. The levels of pain and distress particularly children are exposed to by people is often insurmountable. People don't often become drug casualties voluntarily- it's far more likely the unbearableness of their circumstances are the cause.

Idiotic statement. You should not opine on matters that you know nothing about.
I've heard homeless people say that in street interviews. I even posted one where the well spoken guy said he likes heroin too much to give it up to get his former life back, which he's quite certain he could do, if he wanted to (but I removed it because he used a word that's forbidden on CF). You should ask people how they know something before pretentiously demeaning them. You'd think a psychotherapist would know better.
Your attitude about this is disgusting.
More like realistic. I choose realistic over virtue signalling.

Dang. Never really understood people who take hardcore drugs like that. Although some of it might stem from a sense of self hatred and destructive behavior.
Addiction is messed up. The link between addiction and trauma is pretty strong though.

If you'd REALLY like to understand it, I cannot recommend the book "In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts" by Gabor Mate. It will clarify things.

Mate was the FIRST doctor to work at the safe injection sight at Main and Hastings in Vancouver (THE most messed up 4 sq blocks in canada)

How do you explain all the rich and successful people we hear about on the news all the time who get hooked on drugs and go into rehab? Some people, maybe quite a lot of people, simply take drugs because they enjoy being stoned, without any heart rending life tragedies being connected to it.

They usually start off on soft drugs and then progressively go onto stronger stuff because the weaker stuff doesn't get them high enough.

Rich and successful does not determine happiness, emotional well being, mental health, or prevent various forms of abuse. Rich and successful also is usually accompanied by high stress and pressure to maintain that success.

I don't think everyone who gets hooked on recreational drugs has a heartbreaking traumatic tale of great pain and distress that forced them into it. Often they're just as fine as most before getting into drugs, and they go back to that once they're off drugs.

Some became addicted after being prescribed “safe” opioids. Of the addicts I have known, whether alcohol or other drugs, they were most definitely not fine before addiction and those that did find sobriety had to go back and face their “ not fine” and heal before successful sobriety. That is not fun and addiction can feel easier than facing problems. Framing addiction as ”just wanting to get high for fun” is ignoring the underlying problems most addicts are avoiding via a high.

I said they're often as fine as most. We all experience the downside of life. I think one of the reasons why drug use has skyrocketed is because being responsible and accountable isn't being taught as much in society these days. There's an overall lack of self discipline that's been replaced with a sense of entitlement.

Friends and peers have alot to do with it, as well. If you hang out in an area with alot of drug use, you're more likely to use drugs yourself.

Rarely are drug users otherwise healthy, well adjusted people.

Sometimes the problem isn't abuse or trauma, but neglect, and they have developed impulsive behaviors and have poor executive functioning as a result.

Of course. It's bondage to sin. Trying to fill a void that only knowing God can fill with heroin instead.

Most hardcore drug users, according to what I was told by a former drug user, start off with getting high with their friends partying and then they start becoming addicted. And then they start building up tolerance, so they start progressing to harder drugs.
Sometimes the problem isn't abuse or trauma, but neglect, and they have developed impulsive behaviors and have poor executive functioning as a result.
I think a lot of that is due a decline in responsibility, accountability and discipline being taught in liberal western society. And in the US, that's where the greatest rates of homeless drug users are. I've heard homeless drug users in the Seattle area where I live, say they call Seattle "Freeattle" because the ultra liberal government accommodates them so much. Which is the same problem San Francisco has, but to an even worse degree. Add to that the legal system becoming more and more lax and law enforcement being diminished. My guess is Japan doesn't have a huge homeless drug user situation, because it's a society that still places value on responsibility, accountability and discipline.
