  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

How does God perform miracles?

How does God perform miracles in one's life? Are miracles delivered by Angels or do miracles come directly from the Holy Spirit? eg: A little boy drowns and has been pronounced dead for over one hour then as a miracle applies the young child starts to breathe and there is no sign of brain damage. What do you think?

The scriptures speak of power flowing from Jesus when he would do some healings.

Luke 6:18-19
They had come to hear Him and to be healed of their diseases, and those troubled by unclean spirits were healed. The entire crowd was trying to touch Him, because power was coming from Him and healing them all.

The Holy Spirit is used alongside of power in the New Testament.

Acts 1:8 You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you
Luke 24:49 And behold, I am sending the promise of My Father upon you. But remain in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.”
1 Thessalonians 1:5 our gospel came to you not only in word, but also in power, in the Holy Spirit

So while I can't be certain, I'd say that most of the miracles God performs are a direct intervention of God Himself, i.e. the Holy Spirit.

This doesn't mean that angels can't be ministers of God's grace and mercy. Acts says that an angel is who came down and set Peter free from prison. It also says that angels came to minister to Jesus.

This is a rather open ended question

It could be the Holy Spirit acting directly, or an angel obeying orders from God, and given the power to do whatever is necessary to achieve the miracle.

The angels have a job to do, and so do Mary and the saints. As my old Protestant pastor said to me once, "They're doing something up there."

But they would all be directed and empowered by God in the long run.

Assuming the story is true, it was supposed to be an angel who shut the lion's mouth when Daniel was in the den. But God would have sent him to keep Daniel alive and well.

Daniel 6:22 NIV
My god sent His angel, and he shut the mouths of the lions.

They can also be destructive eg. Exodus 12:23 NIV
When the LORD goes through the land to strike down the Egyptians, he will see the blood on the top and sides of the doorframe and will pass over that doorway, and he will not permit the destroyer to enter your houses and strike you down.

The book of Revelation does not lend itself to easy hermeneutics, but if the "Two Witnesses" in chapter 11 are part of a real prophecy, i think they're angels, and destructive ones at that. It's clear from the text they're acting under orders.

It also says that angels came to minister to Jesus.
This is very touching I can only imagine some of the things that the Angels ministered to Jesus like giving him insporation messages from the Father reminders of the mission at hand and power and authority.

The Holy Spirit is God. The Trinity where the Father, Son and Holy Spirit are one.
Angels are messengers not the source of miracles.
Blessings

I dont belive there is a single case of an angel directly responsible for a healing. This link may help.
What Does the Bible Say About Angels Healing The Sick?
There were one or two Angel at the tomb after Jesus was resurrected. Maybe Angels deliver the Holy Spirit or maybe the angels have the power to give back life. There are many millions if not billions of God's good Angels so they must be doing something apart from just communicating with people.

Actually, only the Holy Spirit has power. The angels delivered a message to Mary. Anyway, I know many people put much focus on angels,. I personally do not.
Thanks for engaging!

I recall that the Holy Spirit overshadowed Mary so she would conceive Jesus.

And indeed angels share in God's loving.

While Jesus was praying in the garden before His crucifixion >

"an angel appeared to Him from heaven, strengthening Him." (in Luke 22:43)

So, our Father included His angels in loving and helping Jesus. I think God does use lesser beings so we all can share as God's family.

The nature of miracles is inherently a mystery. If we knew "how", then it would not be a miracle, but only a higher tech or just previously unknown part of nature.

Yes I remember this I believe the stress on Jesus was so intense that he was sweating blood from his face this was a sure sign that Jesus was going to the cross to feel all the pain that he was about to bare. I do not believe that Jesus was offered any relief from God as his sacrifice had to be very real in order for his sacrifice to be true. That is why Jesus cried to his Father why have you forsaken me the pain must have been so intense that Jesus wanted it to end. No Angels or miracles for Jesus on the cross only his great bravery and purpose to see it through. The Angels that ministered to Jesus before his surrender must have been telling him to be brave it will all be worth it in the end.

I don't think the answer is either/or. We've been told that angels minister to us. And also that healing power flowed directly from Jesus, that is, from God. I think both kinds of events happen. And it's all good.

My thought precisely. I rather think most folks wouldn't recognize a divine miracle unless it was pointed out to them, and then they would argue about it.

He does it through the effect of causality.

Some might see my statement as reducing the power of God to that of natural causes, but we forget that God operates in the natural world through ordinary means. We consider it supernatural, because sometimes those events stupefies our understanding.

In the case of a child drowning, pronounced dead, then revived with no signs of brain damage can be examined by a physician. He can examine what occurred in the brain during that traumatic event. God carried out a series of actions through cause and effect that followed this result. It is a miracle, but it is also the consequence of the smaller details that were at play. He does not need to intervene and break the natural order of things to produce a miracle. He can operate through His divine providence in the affairs of the world to carry out exactly what should happen in the future. I think of it like a domino effect. It was predetermined by His love.
