  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

THIS IS A DISCUSSION FOR THE EASTERN ORTHODOX SUBFORUM

In response to the shenanigans of "Archbishop" Elpidophoros, all twenty monastic communities of Mt Athos have issued a joint statement regarding said shenanigans (namely the baptism of gay so-called "parents")

The big piece:
It is clearly foreign to the teaching of the Gospel and the Orthodox ethos to allow the understanding that a “same-sex couple” can be considered a family with the right to adopt children, as any such form of adoption or foster care is contrary to the teaching of the Gospel, human nature, and also the ethos and traditions of our people, while at the same time it violates the elementary rights of innocent defenseless people, who don’t have the possibility to choose a normal family environment.

A link to the statement in full, in English: Mt. Athos issues statement on baptism of children of same-sex couples

In a similar note, Elpidophoros took up the bulk of a synodal meeting of the Ecumenical Patriarchate with nearly all the bishops expressing concerns, complaints, etc.

That one is here: Archbishop Elpidophoros scandals dominate Constantinople Synod meeting

It calls into question all of the controversial things he and his followers have stood for.

indeed, we’ll see where this goes. maybe this was the shot in the arm a lot of folks needed.

I doubt it. They'll dig in and lawyer their way into convincing their followers that the elders are wrong. These people have an agenda and that agenda isn't preserving the Tradition. It's to progress the Tradition with or without the Holy Mountain.

and the Spirit is about preserving the tradition with or without them, and He is far more powerful than anyone with an agenda.

The last time a faction from within the Church had a progressive agenda was right about the time of the beginning of the Marxist revolution in Russia. I don't know why I had an urge to point that out.

To be a little clearer, the Bolshevik revolution was months after the government collapsed. It was mismanagement and abuse of the country that led the government to collapse, which opened the door for violent criminals like the Bolsheviks to take over.

I was thinking of the Russian Orthodox renovationists, who had formed what they called the "Living Church" and who had developed a socialist and progressive agenda which they were trying to implement Church-wide. The Bolsheviks allied themselves with the renovationists briefly, but only because they wanted to divide and destroy the Church altogether.
