Murder, theft, rape, and physical assault are all wicked things that both morals and the law treat as crimes against other people, and for Christians, these are also sins against God because people bear God's image and such acts are attacks on God's image in human beings.

What of sins named in the scriptures such as gluttony and avarice, are these serious sins, and do they also constitute an attack on the image of God in the person sinning?

Neither of these, gluttony or avarice, are sins in themselves. You can have both traits and be a righteous person through good deeds and actions. That being said, Jesus Christ of Nazareth warned us that idolatry towards such things can keep one away from the Kingdom of God. Blessings

You may be right. But scripture does warn against gluttony.

Sirach 23:6 Let neither gluttony nor lust overcome me, and do not surrender me to a shameless soul.
Sirach 37:31 Many have died of gluttony, but he who is careful to avoid it prolongs his life.​

And greed takes a bit of a beating in these passages: Job 20:20, Ezekiel 16:27, Habakkuk 2:5, 1 Corinthians 5:11, 1 Thessalonians 2:5, 2 Peter 2:3, 2 Peter 2:14

For sure greed is not good but I see it more like idolatry, the worship of material things, basically replacing God with money. That being said, there are many wealthy individuals, that some may consider greedy, who are extreme philanthropists. Without them much of our advances in the human condition could not be helped. Gluttony is bad for ourselves health-wise, not to mention wasteful. And greed often hurts others, by taking from them or withholding from those in need. Plus it makes us the opposite of what it promises; it makes us small, slavish, self-serving, petty.

Just for the sake of conversation. What are your thoughts on Christian preppers? Are they greedy for stalking up on goods in their bomb shelters just for themselves? Are they gluttonous for hoarding food and not sharing with those who are unprepared ? Just curious.

Another thought, are over weight people sinning because they have a weakness for food?

Complicated question for which to give a one size fits all answer. Ezekiel 16:49 is interesting. and Philippians 3:19 has something to say.

Matthew 6:24
“No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.”

You can not be totally devoted to God and greedy desire for riches.

God is not an image, icon or statue.

Most homesteaders and preppers aren’t wealthy or high wage earners. The majority are middle class. They acquire their goods over time. They can’t buy it all at once. Nor do they have the means to secure their property with hired help. They rely on themselves and neighbors to do so.

They’re ordinary folks who make sacrifices in other areas to increase their preparedness. And the majority are more self-sufficient than most. They aren’t as reliant on modern trappings and conveniences.

Prepping is rarely embraced by everyone in the household or loved ones. It’s usually an ideal one person pursues on their own. They try to bring others on board but few join in. When difficulties arise they’re the familial go-to.

While I’m not a prepper I’m conversant in homesteading and live the life. I know many who do the same. Bomb shelters are an escape clause. They’re not meant for your home. They’re meant for a secondary location that contains the materials you need to survive.

Which requires additional property/properties and multiple storehouses. That doesn’t come cheap.

Well, people can have a weakness for drugs and alcohol and material possessions and it can cause harm to themselves and or others eventually. It's all a sign that we're not whole in any case. So whether it's a relatively mild sin or not if it causes harm it's sin. There's all kinds of mitigating circumstances surrounding why a person might be more prone to some sin or another or become habituated to it however.

And my opinion is that Christian preppers are just prepping, not wasting. And nothing wrong with being prepared. However, I don't think that what we do on a small individual scale like that will help for very long if things get truly bad. It would be hard to hang on to what we have when there are lots of have nots around.

yes, they can be serious sins that can prevent one from being saved.
