Huzzah, God bless the lion heart! God bless His Excellency!

Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone announced on Friday that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi should not be admitted to Holy Communion in the Archdiocese of San Francisco, nor should she present herself to receive the Eucharist, until she publicly repudiates her support for abortion.

Cordileone said on May 20 that the step was “purely pastoral, not political” and came after Pelosi, D-Calif., who has described herself as a “devout Catholic,” repeatedly rebuffed his efforts to reach out to her to discuss her abortion advocacy.

Huzzah.

He bent over backwards to not do this, but Nancy Pelosi made herself the poster child for pro-abortion Catholics and she finally found herself excluded from the Eucharist. As it should be. No brainer.

My bet. She will be very publicly seen taking communion in Washington DC, where archbishop Cordelione has no jurisdiction. AND THEN does the same in San Francisco, getting some rebel priest to go along with her. Who will be playing politics with the Eucharist then?

Fantastic news!

Separate letter sent to priests

In a separate letter to priests of the San Francisco Archdiocese also released Friday, Cordileone responded preemptively to criticism that he was “weaponizing the Eucharist.”

He insisted that his decision was “simply application of Church teaching.”

“I have been very clear all along, in both my words and my actions, that my motive is pastoral, not political,” he said in the letter.

In the same letter, the archbishop described his repeated attempts to meet with Pelosi — who represents San Francisco, California’s 12th District, in Congress — since she announced in September 2021 that she would seek to codifyRoe. v. Wade into U.S. law.

He said that he wrote to the Speaker in April this year, “detailing the extreme position to which she has moved on the abortion question and explaining the scandal that it is causing and the danger to her own soul.”

She doesn't need a rebel priest, she just needs to get in a line where a lay person is distributing communion. I don't think we can expect a lay person to enforce that. Can we?

Hopefully this is high profile enough that it A) it scares other Catholics who have been doing what she's done, and B) scares priests who might've thought that they could get away with administering Holy Communion to her anyway. Surely unless it happened in any empty room someone would say something about it and the priest could get in trouble.

If this is Catholic only please forgive me. Well if I had to be spotless to take it.. I could never take it. Its then in that moment we look at our selves and what He did for us.
True. We are just not supposed to take it after committing a mortal sin without confession or in unrepentant sin. That does not mean we are sanctified. It means we are still repenting of sin and running the race.

Huzzah indeed! We have a modern day St. Thomas Becket. My only regret is that His Eminence did not do the whole Bell, Book and Candle bit (although correct me if I’m wrong, I think that’s reserved for major excommunications and anathemas, which this is not).

About time!

He did warn her informally and formally, which took time, because obviously it is not becoming a bishop to just pop up and excommunicate someone out of left field as it were. Indeed Archbishop Cordileone has been the model of episcopal dignity and restraint.

Of the major episcopacies filled by Pope Benedict XVI, Archbishop Cordileone is one of my favorites. Before he took over there was an infamous case of a priest making a crude joke about the intrinsic disorder of his congregants and the common English title of the hymn Salve Regina. Now, Our Lady is honored by frequent Tridentine and occasional Dominican masses at the parish of St. Mary Star of the Sea, and the Archbishop himself has celebrated a number of masses in the Extraordinary Form, including this beautiful Solemn Pontifical Mass at the Napa Institute recorded for EWTN:

Truly a beautiful bishop, possessed of the hieratic dignity which the episcopate requires.

Yes, this could well invite a war among Bishops. Let's pray that it won't happen, and that the U. S. A. Bishop's will join together in unity on this issue over the body and blood of Our Lord!
I know that it's not easy for the Bishop's to hold firm on this point, especially when it's such a public issue ( when it should be a private one!).
But hold firm is exactly what MUST happen, if the integrity of the Holy Eucharist is to be maintained.
And the Bishop's must remember that, no kidding, "The buck stops with them."
It is absolutely a matter of personel integrity for them, and it's set in a very public arena.
Let's pray that they understand that.

In our parish only our priest distributes the Body and The Blood now, just to avoid such situations.

I don't think you can really put a lay person in that position but that's just my opinion.
She's been publicly disciplined and the discipline holds until she publicly repents, it's very clear and there's no reason for anyone to feel they have to guess about her eligibility to present herself to receive the Eucharist. I don't understand why you think an extraordinary minister would be in an awkward position here, but even if it were awkward the blame lies on Pelosi.

She's been publicly supporting the supposed right to kill unborn children for her entire political career, well over thirty years, and that's quite a bit more time than was reasonable.

About darn time! Its simple we need adults and good Catholics to simply say "No"! and to stand.
My only worry is that the Vatican will turn on this man of God.
If the Vatican turns on the Him, it will be done quite publically, and it will create an issue where none should exist.
Pray that if such a thing should happen, that God will step in, and clarify the matter in the hearts of the clergy involved.
Stepping up for what is right is never easy, but it is ALWAYS necessary.
Never has that been made more clear around the World, than in these days.
