Also, in the name of a clear roadmap, be aware not all continuing Anglican churches are breakaways from The Episcopal Church. The ACNA congregation in my area was formerly a Vineyard Church and looks more Vineyard like than Anglican to me, such that I could never be comfortable there.

The ACNA is not a Continuing Anglican church. The definition excludes ACNA and for good reason. The ACNA is an Anglican church that separated from TEC, but at a completely different time and for completely different reasons from those which called the "Continuers" into action thirty years prior and gave the movement that name (Continuing). It doesn't just mean coming later than TEC or branching off from her, etc.

But as it turns out, your comment about a Vineyard church turning into an Anglican church is appropriate, though. This sort of thing, and the recruitment of clergy from non-liturgical churches, is something that is not uncommon in ACNA.

Thanks for the correction. You have had to remind me of this before as I recall. I tend to lump together all those that have chosen not to be with TEC.

Good Evening,

After many years of searching for a church denomination, I settled on traditional (non-mainline) Anglicanism a few years back, and I don't regret it. I think the middle way of the Anglican tradition is closest among all existing churches to the way of the early church.

However, I am not theologically liberal on most issues, and I'm about to move to a place with absolutely no traditional Anglican churches. There is a very large, quite "liberal" (not sure how else to describe it) Episcopal Church in town. There are many other mainline churches as well (PC USA, Methodist, etc.)

The only traditional Protestant churches around are a couple of small Lutheran churches (LCMS, I think) and a couple of very small Presbyterian churches. All the others are evangelical, Baptist, etc., and I'm not a Baptist.

Honestly, I just don't know what to do. I don't feel like I fit into any of these options. I feel too traditional for mainline churches, I don't believe in believer's baptism (at all) so most Evangelical and Baptist churches are out, and I wouldn't even be eligible to take communion in a confessional Lutheran church because of my beliefs on the Lord's supper, and the local traditional Presbyterian churches are very small and not nearly sacramental enough for me.

Does anyone have any thoughts about this, helpful advice, etc.? I'm open to any and all suggestions, but I'm especially interested in the opinions of Anglicans (which is why I'm posting this thread here), since they are more likely to understand where I'm coming from theologically.

Thanks for your time!

If you seek a Lutheran Church you should be able to find a Missouri Synod. Those are the traditional Lutheran Churches.

Don't forget WELS, which is the Wisconsin Synod Lutherans. They are more conservative than the LCMS.

Not all LCMS Churches are "more conservative"; although if the followed the Synod they would be.

Likewise the WELS Church is not "more" conservative than the LCMS, but is more legalistic and pietistic than the LCMS.

I live in a liberal State and the Missouri Synod's here are very traditional. True, some more traditional than others. But all of them I've been to are the best Churches by far in my area. Now I've been to the local Anglican Church and do love the liturgy there even more than at the Lutheran Church. But the Church is too liberal for me so the Lutheran Churches in my area have the overall best and most balanced doctrine where I live. The only thing that bothers me about the Lutheran Church is their awkward way of listing the 10 Commandments lol. That and how they use the ESV as their pulpit Bible.

I would disagree with that characterization of WELS, having been a member of a WELS church, and BTW ECUSA/ACNA also.

I doubt there is any church we will agree with on everything, listing the 10C isn't an essential of the faith, IMHO.

I've never been to one of those before. I have heard they are pretty good. But more conservative than Missouri Synod is not something I've heard said about them before. How is the Wisconsin Synod more conservative?

The first thing I check in a church is their position on creationism. If they are not YEC then I don't attend.

Off the top of my head WELS does not allow women to teach men over 18, and they do not allow women to vote in church elections.

WELS does not tolerate theistic evolution, see Creation Questions – WELS.

While researching this I came across the following, apparently the Catholic toleration of the practice of homosexuality isn't anything new:

"When Pope Leo X rejected the request that cardinals restrict the number of boys they kept for sexual exploitation, Luther criticized Roman Catholic church for how “openly and shamelessly the pope and the cardinals in Rome practice sodomy.”

Also, in his teaching on Sodom and Gomorrah from Genesis 19:4-5, Luther wrote:

“I for my part do not enjoy dealing with this passage, because so far the ears of the Germans are innocent of and uncontaminated by this monstrous depravity; for even though disgrace, like other sins, has crept in through an ungodly soldier and a lewd merchant, still the rest of the people are unaware of what is being done in secret.

The Carthusian monks deserve to be hated because they were the first to bring this terrible pollution into Germany from the monasteries of Italy.”

Well fortunately I do live in Wisconsin and there is at least 1 Wisconsin Synod in my area. Maybe one of these days I'll check it out. But I do love the Missouri Synods. Many parents are pulling their children out of the Public Schools and sending them to the Missouri Synod. In fact, the MS has so many new children that's I'm afraid my niece may not be able to get in. But it goes to show you how badly messed up the Public School system is and how parents who want the best for their children are going the extra mile to assure that their children has a higher education and in a normal class atmosphere. I also attended a Missouri Synod school for a while. They are excellent schools!! ;)

I'm sure they are, the LCMS won't steer you or your children wrong. Our son went to a WELS school for a while, no complaints.

When I lived in IL the LCMS was probably the predominant rural church there.

Regarding the listing of the 10 commandments, remember that the numbering did not come from the Bible, rather these numberings are man made;
Lutheran and Catholic (Traditional Christian) Version:
1. I am the Lord your God: You shall not have strange Gods before me.
2. You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain.
3. Remember to keep holy the Lord’s Day.
4. Honor your father and mother.
5. You shall not kill.
6. You shall not commit adultery.
7. You shall not steal.
8. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
9. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife.
10. You shall not covet your neighbor’s goods.

Then the Radical Reformers who were Iconoclasts came along after the Lutheran Reformation; So they changed the enumeration accordingly, and commenced pulling down altars, destroying stained glass, removing statues, desecrating tombs of the saints etc. The Peasant's revolt and Oliver Cromwell's revolution come to mind:

Protestant Version
1. Thou shalt have no other gods before me.
2. Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image.
3. Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain.
4. Remember the Sabbath Day to keep it holy.
5. Honor thy father and thy mother.
6. Thou shalt not kill.
7. Thou shalt not commit adultery.
8. Thou shalt not steal.
9. Thou shalt not bear false witness.
10. Thou shalt not covet.

It may be how one defines "Legalistic and Pietistic"; I stand by what I wrote.

Those 'radical' Reformers simply listed the commandments the Bible did, and rightly included the prohibition on graven images found in Exodus 20:4-6, which offence the RCC church is heavily invested in. The RCC lists bans on coveting twice in their list to make up for the missing graven image prohibition.

Hey y'all, this is the Anglican forum. If this thread is going to turn into a discussion of Lutheran denominations, maybe starting a new thread over there might be good.

Point taken, it looks like the Cof E 10 Commandments does include the prohibition against idols that the RCC omits.
