I'm not a blacksmith but would love to see what you do.

That hammer is made out of screws.

And I have been making axes. I make other stuff like calipers and small anvils. I don't have any pictures of the axes but Ill try to get some.

Thanks for the interest!

I admit I often wonder a lot about this kind of stuff, especially the kinds of labor needed to construct medieval armor, especially chain mail, putting all those little rings together to eventually have a working suit.

It makes me wonder if they had any short cuts, like molds to make 100 rings at a time etc.

The wire is wrapped around a bar and firmly pressed together leaving no gaps between the wires. the wires are cut from one side only and removed from the bar. Voila, here are your links. And no, there were no machines around to link the little guys together. I suppose ladies put the chainmail together because it's too fiddly for most dudes. LOL

Yeah that is especially my reaction, coordination aint my thing in general, but especially not fine finger manipulation, like working those small X box controllers etc. Yeah probably someone good at sowing might be good at putting that stuff together.

My wife does this to make "jump rings" for jewelry. She can make scores of them very quickly, it's easy once you have the wire. Making the wire was probably the hard part, not sure how they did that.

Yeah, Jacks, you're exactly right. It's usually 16 gauge but my quick search offered nothing other than what part of the century chainmail came from. When and if you find out, enquiring minds (who love all trivial things) want to know! LOL!

Yeah, those are cool! Very nice.

So here's an axe I made with square nails.

The wrapped part is made of square nails and its forge welded onto the cutting bit.

They did it one at a time. Not making the rings but putting together the suit.

Did you know the ladies sewed the outer space suit fabric together? For the Apollo space suits. If they lost one of their pins they were in big trouble.

Oooooh-ooooh! My friend was one of the people who sewed on the latest space suit! She was given 200 pins and they all had to be accounted for!
