The majority of the left does not want open borders. But there are those in the left that do.
Often the left in general supports policy that in effect is almost open borders. It's not quite all the way there, but it's awful close.
It's not a left vs right thing. However in USA there is a difference between the Biden Democrat administration and the Trump Republican administration.
The Trump 2016 campaign was spearheaded with immigration promises.
Build a wall and make Mexico pay for it
Muslim ban
The wall was to be a hugely expensive project of which very little new wall was created, mostly just replacement of already existing barrier. This was funded by USA tax payers not Mexico.
The Muslim ban was rushed through, causing chaos at airports and was eventually blocked by the courts as being racist and unconstitutional. After several adjustments and tries, the Muslim ban eventually was allowed by the courts.
Trump appointed Stephen Miller a white nationalist as the head of immigration.
Olivia Troye tweeted that Stephen Miller, a senior adviser to former President Donald Trump, teamed up with “enablers” to undermine anyone trying to get the allies out by “devastating” the special immigrant visa system at the departments of State and Homeland Security.
“Stephen Miller would peddle his racist hysteria about Iraq & Afghanistan,” tweeted Troye. She described Pence as “fully aware” of the problem.
Trump was reported to have said
According to the aide, when the group came to discussing immigration from Africa, Trump asked why America would want immigrants from "all these sh$%hole countries" and that the U.S. should have more people coming in from places like Norway.
Privately, the president had often talked about fortifying a border wall with a water-filled trench, stocked with snakes or alligators, prompting aides to seek a cost estimate. He wanted the wall electrified, with spikes on top that could pierce human flesh. After publicly suggesting that soldiers shoot migrants if they threw rocks, the president backed off when his staff told him that was illegal. But later in a meeting, aides recalled, he suggested that they shoot migrants in the legs to slow them down. That’s not allowed either, they told him.
When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best. […] They’re sending people that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those problems with us. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists. And some, I assume, are good people
Zero Tolerance policy and family separations
Under Trump admin there was the introduction of the zero tolerance policy at the Southern Border which led to families being separated, their children taken away and shipped across the USA country with very little documentation to allow families to be eventually reunited. This was an extremely cruel policy, destroying people's fundamental right to be a family and shifting the cost burden of raising those children to the USA taxpayer.
As elections approached The Trump admin public relations and Fox News ramped up coverage of the Southern Boarder, talking about an invasion, claiming there were drug dealers and Muslim terrorists.
Under the Biden administration all this drama went away.
- The cruel practice of family separations was stopped
- The racist Muslim ban was stopped
- The financially irresponsible spending on the boarder wall was halted.
The immigration policies under the Biden Admin, seem to be humanistic, pragmatic and accepting of the realities that USA faces.
The immigration policies under the Trump Admin seemed to be highly geared for Optics, they were cruel, focused on blocking non whites, non christians, expensive, rushed and overly simplistic.
