Because all true prophecy comes from the Spirit of Messiah.
Revelation 19:10 And I fell at his feet to worship him. But he said to me,
“See that you do not do that! I am your fellow servant, and of your brethren
who have the testimony of Jesus. Worship God!
For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.

1 Peter 1:
10 Of this salvation the prophets have inquired and searched carefully,

A prophet is someone who speaks or preaches the word of God. Jesus was in fact a prophet because that is what he did on earth. Most people believe that Jesus was a carpenter*. A carpenter is someone who works with wood. So if Jesus worked with wood he would be a carpenter. So we have prophet, carpenter high priest, son of God, third Person of the Trinity, Logos, Word, etc. All of those are appropriate.

*I personally think Jesus was a monk, for lack of a better term.

is fulfilled in Messiah is important, perhaps even a necessity.

Prophets of old were also king makers, declaring God's choice for king.
Jesus was/is the ultimate prophet as the King He proclaimed was God himself (hence the Gospel of the Kingdom).

Yes, it was necessary that he fulfill all that was written about him in order to be Messiah, not to mention they were expecting the "prophet to come" as stated in Deuteronomy ??:??.
