  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Alex Jones found guilty in all 4 defamation cases (Sandy Hook)

Because one exercises their freedom and steps out and says something....does that mean they couldn't get a knock on the door by someone wanting to arrest them? Wouldn't have meant that person was living in a place of freedom at all!

Barring actual threats against other people, the First Amendment of the Constitution protects you from being arrested for stepping out and saying things... so rest assured, you are living in a place of freedom.

However, it's your responsibility to be informed and educated enough to know the limits of your freedoms.

I won't connect this to the Jones case but do you know how many totalitarians regimes have made statement like this to defend their tyrannical ways?

All of them, I'm sure -
Nevertheless, I don't expect to see the Alex Jones show airing slanders, defamations and lies in Heaven
I don't expect the verdict to have been (substantially) different if Christ was the judge
Even Alex Jones himself didn't obey the judge's orders to provide the documentation he was ordered to. The case wasn't heard as a result. The case defaulted after many years

Judge Barbara Bellis took the rare step of defaulting Jones in the defamation lawsuits for his and his companies' “failure to produce critical material information that the plaintiffs needed to prove their claims.” The default means the judge found in favor of the parents and will hold a hearing on how much damages he should pay.

Thus when someone says "well take note freedom has been destroyed!" after Jones does what he does and then basically ignores court orders to come to a conclusion on the matter...
...I feel like we probably have a different definition of what freedom is and what it should be used for and how it should be used. Every human does, that's OK. I'm sure it will get explained clearly in the end by the person that gave it to us.

Here is the thing, I think at a certain point or level you VERY much are liable wether you knew it was wrong or not.
My understanding is that it's a bit of a sliding scale. The bar for proving defamation is set much higher for public figures and certain other contexts.

Nobody is going to knock on your door unless you actually threaten somebody or surf child porn sites. You might get a knock on your CF profile by they that cannot be named if you violated the TOS.

Conspiracy theorist Alex Jones claims to have been beset by a mysterious medical condition days before he was scheduled for a deposition in a lawsuit over his false claims about the 2012 Sandy Hook massacre.

But lawyers for the victims’ families suing Jones are suspicious about his claim that he’s now too sick to sit for the deposition, pointing out that Jones managed to host his InfoWars show for hours while he was supposedly receiving emergency care from a doctor.

Jones and InfoWars lost the lawsuit in November [the event in the OP], when a Connecticut judge took the rare step of ruling them in default after years of alleged violations of courtroom procedure. It’s not clear yet, though, how much Jones and his media outlet will have to pay in damages.

Alex Jones may be quite ill. He is rumored to have lost control of his bowels.

His "mysterious medical condition" is insanity and/or sadism.

And he may be lying.
Considering he presented a letter from a doctor that said he can't attend the deposition because he shouldn't leave the house, but then filmed his show (outside of his house) during the deposition, I think it's safe to assume he's lying

Alex Jones Offers to Settle Sandy Hook Defamation Claims by Paying Plaintiffs $120K Each and Issuing ‘Heartfelt Apology for Any Distress His Remarks Caused’

Within hours, each plaintiff rejected the offers by Jones and his attorneys to rubbish the case in return for cash payments.

The offers by Jones came just days after the plaintiffs asked a judge to hold Jones in contempt for repeatedly failing to appear for a deposition. Jones said the planned sit-and-talk session in Texas was causing him “significant stress” and cited unspecified medical concerns for failing to appear.

Alex jones is a pathetic loser that fed off of hate and fear mongering and now doesn't like he has to pay for it.

I don't know if it was so much hate as it was a propensity for certain people to want to believe conspiracy theories that drew people to him.

Out of sheer morbid curiosity I've listened to some of his content, I didn't hear anything explicitly bigoted in terms of racial issues or anything like that...just a bunch of stuff about how everything is an "inside job" and a disproportionate amount of time spent on irrational fears about fluoride, GMOs, and vaccines.

Obviously there was the "gay frogs" thing, but that was more of a fluoride conspiracy than a gay conspiracy.

...that's retarded, whats the point of a fine if it will be voided, with everything he's done he should not get a refund.
The fine in this case isn't to punish, but rather to coerce him to come to court.

Maybe, but that won't do anything. Oh if I just ignore for another 2 years I get to have my money back? Whats the incentive to have him rush back, if he was losing 25k a day or what ever permanitly it have more effect then he can ignore them again. He's already been doing it for years.
