  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Does the Bible teach about Purgatory?

Does the Bible teach about Purgatory?
Does purgatory exist?

My opinion: there is no purgatory - does not / will not exist. the Bible does not give reference to a purgatory.

And considering the meaning of purgatory _ in the book of Revelation, chapter 20 the thousand years that we spend with Jesus after the first judgement is the only thing in the Bible that comes a little close to what the Catholics feel purgatory is - but there is no suffering. Besides from my understanding of what the Catholics teach, one goes to purgatory after one dies. So I don't believe that there is a purgatory.
What is Purgatory?

It is my understanding that the doctrine of Purgatory is taken from a reference in the Book of Maccabees, which is included in the Catholic and Orthodox Bibles. It appears that the doctrine was a development from Jewish tradition. However, the Catholic Purgatory has evolved considerably from the traditional Jewish view of the afterlife, which held that no person bound for Heaven would be punished for any longer than one year and I do not believe that the Jewish view contained the concept of burning which has often been associated with the Catholic Purgatory.

Purgatory was the way the RCC tried to reason out an interesting question. If we are believers but we have committed sins that we arent repentant about, what happens when we die?

As for sheol and hades, from the Orthodox perspective, it is a forerunner of our final state in the final judgement. So as described by Christ in the rich man and Lazarus, they are in Abraham's bosom, a precursor to heaven, and hades, a precursor to the eternal fire.

I have no idea what Scheol is, but read Hades is the formal name for Hell.

Sheol was the Jewish concept for the state of dead and sort of interchangeable with Hades.

Does the Bible teach about Purgatory?
Does purgatory exist?
The Bible doesn't irrefutably teach anything about the place and purpose of Purgatory. No, it doesn't exist.

Purgatory is non-biblical and anti-biblical. Purgatory is an anti-biblical concept because it offers purification for sins[1] through punishment after death. The Roman Catholic religion teaches that Purgatory is a cleansing fire that achieves the holiness needed to experience the joy of heaven; the time needed to purge sins in Purgatory will vary from person to person.

According to Vatican Council II, Roman Catholics must compensate for their wrongdoing “...through the sorrows, miseries and trials of this life and, above all, through death. Otherwise the expiation [act of atoning for sin] must be made in the next life through fire[2] and torments of purifying punishments” (Vatican Council II).

According to the Roman Catholic Catechism, “...every sin, even venial, entails an unhealthy attachment to creatures, which must be purified either here on earth, or after death in the state called Purgatory”; “The Church also commends almsgiving, indulgences, and works of penance undertaken on behalf of the dead”.

[1]The true Gospel is very different: Christ’s once-for-all sacrificial death, and His victorious resurrection, secured purification of sins for all those who would place their saving faith in Him. “He is the radiance of [God's] glory and the exact representation of His nature, and upholds all things by the word of His power. When He had made purification of sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high” (Hebrews 1:3, NASB).

[2] The "fire" of 1st Corinthians 3:13-15 is in the context of the quality of the deeds that the believer builds on the foundation of Christ: “...each man’s work will become evident; for the day will show it” (v. 13).

Does Bible say believers will straightway go to heaven or paradise after body's death?
Unbelievers will go to where?

Yup, Jesus was quite specific that once in, never out..:)-

Jesus said:-"Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life" (Matthew 25:46)

The "purgatory" nonsense is just a satanic concept to sucker people into thinking that even if they were nasty people on earth and then find themselves in hell, they'll be let out eventually.
Jesus said to the genuinely repentant thief on the cross next to him-
"Today shalt thou be with me in paradise" (Luke 23:33),
see, no mention of "purgatory"

Where are the fallen angels?
Does God allow them to create havoc in the world?

Just look around..:)

Will God send angel to fetch my spirit?
Is it true that some people who experienced NDE (near death experience) can see angel or even their relatives who died earlier?
When Paul said he knew someone who was taken to the 3rd heaven, did he mean NDE?

2 Corinthians 12:2,
I know a man in Christ who fourteen years ago was caught up to the third heaven. Whether it was in the body or out of the body I do not know—God knows.

the Bible clearly teaches for the need of purification after death. The Church calls it Purgatory. Don't like the name, then call it something else, but scripture is clear.

IMO, the only good use of Maccabees is to counter the false claim protestants put forth that The Church invented the idea of purgatory in the middle ages.

Jesus tells us at the final judgment about the fate of those on His left and those on His right. But the gospel DOES NOT teach that those believers bound for Heaven go straight to Heaven.
