  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

What happens if you make a promise to god? Do you have to fulfill it no matter what? What does being bound to a promise mean or if it is binding? Does that mean if you don’t fulfill it you go to hell?
Welcome to CF. We are still in the flesh and are subject to its lusts. Repent from making promises to the Lord as you do not know if you can keep them. Blessings.

Why are you making promises to God?

God does not make bargains with us, he expects our obedience.

So if you have a condition that causes you to make promises you cannot keep, or causes you distress until you make a promise.
You need to repent of the sin of lying to God. ( that is what a promise you will not or cannot fulfil )

If the first conditions apply then you are not bound by promises that you were co herst into making.

Please seek medical help for that condition.

Also remember Gods promise in Isaiah, that the smoking flax he will not put out or break the bruised reed.
Those of tender faith he knows about and like a shepherd will carry those weak lambs.

Jesus said:

Mat 5:33-37 You know that our ancestors were told, "Don't use the Lord's name to make a promise unless you are going to keep it." But I tell you not to swear by anything when you make a promise! Heaven is God's throne, so don't swear by heaven. The earth is God's footstool, so don't swear by the earth. Jerusalem is the city of the great king, so don't swear by it. Don't swear by your own head. You cannot make one hair white or black. When you make a promise, say only "Yes" or "No." Anything else comes from the devil.

We see from this that God does not "want" us to make promises. He said that the pressure to make promises comes from the devil, not God. The devil knows he can make us stressed and worried, even fearful of God, if we break a promise.

Knowing that promises are not God's will, but rather a pressure put on us by the devil, tell God you are sorry for making promises you can not keep. If it is a promise that is bringing you harm (as they often are) forget the promise and move on. If it is a promise you can keep, and it does you no harm, try your best to keep it, but if you fail know God will not punish you.
