IS THE RULE OF FAITH AND PRACTICE ALWAYS SCRIPTURE ALONE?

For me this is not a very hard question to answer from the scriptures.

WHAT DO WE MEAN BY GOD'S WORD?

Of course Jesus is the living Word of God *John 1:1-4; 14 but the scriptures are Gods' recorded written Word of God handed down from Jesus, the Apostles and the Prophets, written for our admonition upon who the ends of the world have come (1 Corinthians 10:11) and all scripture is God breathed and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness (2 Timothy 3:16). So we have Jesus as the living Word of God who has given us His spoken Word of God which we have today as the recorded written Word of God which is scripture. In this OP we are talking about Gods recorded written Word (scripture) as the only rule of faith. Of course no one can know the truth of Gods' Word (scripture) unless God guides and teaches us as we prayerfully pray for His Spirit *John 7:17; John 16:13; John 14:26; John 8:31-36; Hebrews 8:11; 1 John 2:27.

WHAT DO WE MEAN BY GOD'S WORD IN THIS OP?

Unless otherwise stated we are talking about scripture as the recorded written Word of God given to us by Jesus, the Apostles and the prophets (the Bible).

2 Timothy 3:16-17 [16], ALL SCRIPTURE (G1124) IS GIVEN BY INSPIRATION (God breathed) OF GOD, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: [17], That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished to all good works.

The literal Greek word meaning used here for "scripture" is γραφή; graph G1124 meaning holy writings; or a writing or something that is written that is holy. This is also shown in the context of 2 Timothy 3:14-15 which says [14] Continue you in the things which you have learned and have been assured of, knowing of whom you have learned them; [15], And that from a child you have known the HOLY SCRIPTURES, which are able to make you wise to salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. Therefore dear friend once again the scriptures are the only rule of faith because faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God *Romans 10:17.

So scripture is God's words given to mankind that are profitable for for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness. God gives us scripture so that we may be perfected and thoroughly furnished to all good works.

WHY IS SCRIPTURE THE ONLY RULE OF FAITH?

If the scriptures teach us that "faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God" (Romans 10:17) and we are saved by God's grace through faith that comes from Gods' Word (Ephesians 2:8-9) and again whatsoever is not of faith is sin according to Gods' Word (Romans 14:23) and again without faith that comes from Gods' Word it is impossible to please God (Hebrews 11:6) how can we have Gods' salvation and how can the scriptures not be the only rule of faith when our faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God?

Matthew 4:4 Man does not live by bread alone BUT BY EVERY WORD THAT PROCEEDS OUT OF THE MOUTH OF GOD.

According to the scriptures we receive God's Spirit by believing and following what Gods' Word says. God's Spirit is the Spirit of the Word of God *John 6:63 and works through Gods' Word *John 17:17 as we believe and follow what God's Word says allowing God to work in and through us to will and to do of His own good pleasure Philippians 2:13. Faith (belief or believing) comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God we are saved by grace through faith that comes from Gods' Word. Therefore I believe that the scriptures are the only rule of faith. The truth of Gods' Word can only be found as we seek Jesus for it through his Word by claiming his promise for his Spirit to be our guide and teacher (see John 16:13; John 7:17; John 14:26; John 8:31-36; 1 John 2:27). This is God's new covenant promise to those who believe and follow Gods' Word *Hebrews 8:10-12.

WHO ARE GOD'S SAINTS OR PEOPLE?

John 10:26-27 [26], But YOU BELIEVE NOT BECAUSE YOU ARE NOT MY SHEEP, as I said to you. [27], MY SHEEP HEAR MY VOICE AND I KNOW THEM AND THEY FOLLOW ME.

John 3:36, HE THAT BELIEVES ON THE SON HAS EVERLASTING LIFE; HE THAT BELIEVES NOT THE SON SHALL NOT SEE LIFE, BUT THE WRATH OF GOD REMAINS ON HIM.

The 'Word of God" existed before the scripture was written.

Jesus is the Word of God.

John 1...

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him not even one thing came into being that has come into being. 4 In Him was life, and the life was the Light of mankind. 5 And the Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not grasp it.

The 'Word of God" existed before the scripture was written.

No one said that the Word of God did not exist before scripture and there is no problem dear friend. Jesus is the living Word of God and before the written Word of God we had the "spoken" Word of God (John 1:1-4). Now we have the recorded written Words of God (2 Timothy 3:16) that we are to live by (Matthew 4:4) that are written for our admonition upon who the ends of the world have come (1 Corinthians 10:11). If we do not have Gods' Word there is no faith because faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God *Romans 10:17. Without faith that comes by Gods' Word it is impossible to please God for he that comes to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him (Hebrews 11:6) because whatsoever is not of faith is sin *Romans 14:23. According to the scriptures if we do not believe Gods' Word we do not receive eternal life and the wrath of God abides on us (John 3:36). Therefore the scriptures are the only rule of faith because it is through the scriptures that we have faith.

I never said that Jesus is not the living Word of God Carl. However Gods' Word whether scripture or spoken is God's Word. You cannot separate God from His Word. Gods' Words are not like our words they are indeed alive and living in those who believe them.
