I thought it would be interesting to make a thread asking posters here if they suffer from any disabilities.. be it mental or physical. What have been your experiences? Cons and possible benefits?

As for me I was born without a sense of smell. Never fully realized it until I was in my early teens. Before that I always assumed my nose must somehow be stuffed up. Or I wasn't trying hard enough to sniff, or that smells were just really subtle and I am too stupid to pick them up. I consider anosmia to be no different than being born blind. In fact it's probably worse..

Nah.. I'm just kidding.. when it comes to disabilities anosmia is probably the bottom of the barrel. Doesn't stop some millennials or some other generation from trying to cash this in for some oppression points though.. lol. Personally I find videos like this funny. Eating food may be a more bland experience, but I also do not have to deal with being penetrated with rotten smells. Which sounds violating. So I think it all evens out in the end.. lol.

Here is one woman who decided to make a whole Youtube channel about it. She's an anosmia activist.

I guess I do worry about not being able to detect rotten food and being burned alive in a fire and whether or not I'm a walking dumpster.. but meh.. lol.

We are all mentally ill in one way or another.

Although I will say i did have one bad experience due to my anosmia earlier this year. At my previous job there was one woman there who was madly obsessed/ in love with me. She would have period of mood swings where she'd act really loving to me and just downright hateful and mean during others. One day she suddenly accused me of passing gas and stinking up the whole place. The thing is, she might be right. I never really pay any mind to when I fart because it has so little consequence to me. This is like the first time in my life where someone yelled at me about it. I do remember other times when people would be like "hey.. did someone fart in here?" lol.. and I honestly didn't know if it was me or not.. because it never even registers that I might have done so because passing gas is so inconsequential to me.

She actually told HR on me over this and blabbed to other co-workers that I was farting around her on purpose. Although her mood suddenly shifted and she told the HR lady to forget about it. I came close to just breaking down and having a screaming match over her for this. I told her I didn't have a sense of smell and that it wasn't anything personal.

Since that unpleasant experience I cannot help but be more aware when I feel gas coming. I've read that being six feet away is enough room so yeah.. I hope they're right.. lol. Fortunately for me it seems like you smellers cannot approximate the source of smells very well.. lol.

Honestly I've never really had anyone complain about my smell. Other than when I was a teenager and was taught the importance of wearing deodorant. Lol.

True, we don't have very a stereosmellic sense of direction, though the sense of depth of smell is definitive.

As for me, despite most meals being bland.. some meals.. do leave me with an overload of taste. Mainly warm almost liquid type food, with sauces. Meals that can soak my tongue leave me with a very deep taste sensation. Hot chocolate sauce is a very delicious sensation for me.

Not being able to smell doesn't mean all meals are bland. The majority are, but a few can still knock one's socks off. Lol.

Although I imagine they may be better with smell.. but even then.. some meals are so tasty I can't imagine ramping up the level.

One that I am aware of is writing.

From school days when we had a stiff pen and had to keep dipping it in

ink, most often too much ink so it just looked a mess.

It followed me all through the years so five words on a postcard was about max for me.
Not only the ink thing but difficulty putting thoughts on paper.

Even with the internet I type but do not submit a lot .

Simply put, I hate having to write.

But slowly I am getting there, being on a forum is good training.

Can you tell the difference between Apples and Potatoes, (besides consistency)? I tried it with my nose pinched shut, like they say, and could still easily tell the difference, (but then, confirmation bias...).

Yeah I can certainly tell the difference between apples and potatoes. Apples having a stronger impact taste wise compared to potatoes. Saying this, I somewhat dislike the tastes of apples and much prefer potatoes. This is generally true for all fruits and vegetables.

I find it interesting that someone who can smell can find it hard to find most of the flavor in the moment. The same is true for me too. Chugging something down is hard to appreciate, but when I concentrate on a small sip (especially with it stewing in the tongue for a short while) the taste can really come out.

I do find it occasionally weird why some meals are most tasty than others. Bread is usually tasteless, but if I eat it by itself I find more to appreciate. A dry tongue usually helps too.. especially with liquids.

My experience tasting things with no smell might be somewhat less severe compared to those who were born with smell. Since my brain has probably come up with tricks to mitigate the lack of the aid of smell. Sadly like many things with age.. I do fear that it will become more difficult to enjoy food as my taste buds naturally diminish with time. True for everyone else, but without smell to pick up the slack it might be more severe.

I do know back in the day (like 2007) there was a poster here who was blind. She used audio software to post on this site. I thought that was pretty cool.

I do enjoy watching Youtube channels about blind and death people experiences. You learn little things you'd never think about before. Molly Burke and Tommy Edison are two good channels about the experience of blindness.

My taste buds, whatever they are, have not diminshed the slightest.

Ate cod this evening and it tasted as it always has tasted.

A big filet, big flakes when pushed with a fork they just said, flopp.
