Senate report gives new details of Trump efforts to use Justice Dept. to overturn election

On Jan. 3, then-acting attorney general Jeffrey Rosen, his deputy Richard Donoghue, and a handful of other administration officials met in the Oval Office for what all expected to be a final confrontation on Trump’s plan to replace Rosen with Jeffrey Clark, a little-known Justice Department official who had indicated he would publicly pursue Trump’s false claims of mass voter fraud.

For three hours, the officials then debated Trump’s plan, and the insistence by Rosen and others that they would resign rather than go along with it.

The Senate report says that the top White House lawyer, Pat Cipollone, and his deputy also said they would quit if Trump went through with his plan.

Background: a similar phone call from December 27.

Trump call to DOJ in Dec 2020: 'Just say that the election was corrupt + leave the rest to me'

In particular, other DOJ officials were also ready to resign in the wake of this meeting.

Thankfully, justice dept officials and the president's own council (Cipollone) were not willing to cross that line....but what if they had?

"A key issue in the meeting was a letter that Clark and Trump wanted the Justice Department to send to Georgia officials warning of “irregularities” in voting and suggesting the state legislature get involved. Clark thought the letter should also be sent to officials in other states where Trump supporters were contesting winning Biden vote totals, the report said.

Rosen and Donoghue had refused to send such a letter, infuriating Trump. According to the report, the president thought that if he installed Clark as the new attorney general, the letter would go out and fuel his bid to toss out Biden victories in a handful of states.

At one point in the meeting, Cipollone called Clark’s letter a “murder-suicide pact,” for the chain reaction it would be likely to set off inside the government."

I guess I'm kind of amazed at the continued fixation on Trump when Biden is running things and has lots off his own problems and mistakes, as well as long standing history of corruption that shows no signs of going away but actually increasing when you factor in all the Hunter Biden stories.

for what all expected to be a final confrontation on Trump’s plan to replace Rosen with Jeffrey Clark, a little-known Justice Department official who had indicated he would publicly pursue Trump’s false claims of mass voter fraud.

I also think this is kind of a Strawman. The "mass" part, it very easy to get someone in office with "targeted voter fraud" of swing states , focusing on their big cities. The media has largely avoided the stories of the irregularities that take place. There are some videos of a Youtuber Razorfist, the Rageaholic that covers a lot of the nitty gritty of the Arizona so called "audit" generally ignored by the media, but the actual details of it are not favorable to the notion that the election was hunki dori. Would love to post some a link or two but the guy does love to cuss....

I also find it interesting the various admissions that sometimes take place inadvertently, like the Time magazine article bragging about how various people "acted to save Democracy" etc. Which is basically is a story of actual real life "collusion", and media censorship etc. with the expressed purpose of ousting Trump.

Scandal first, investigation second. I can't help that Trump's scandalous and baseless attempt to stay in power happened during the last month of his presidency.

I don't quite understand the point of resigning at that point. If their goal was preventing Trump from doing bad stuff, it seems to me that they'd have been better positioned to stop him by staying in their jobs and slow-walking all of his orders. It would've been one thing if Trump still had months or years left in power to circumvent that kind of blockade, but he had a few days before the votes were certified and two weeks before the inauguration. Even a couple days' worth of stalling could make a big difference.

Those of us who wish to continue being a constitutional republic are looking to see how the last administration tried to usurp power since it is a distinct possibility he will try again. I find that to be a scary proposition so I want information to help combat it in the future.

You're amazed that people are still looking into the treasonous behavior of the former President? Should we just "look the other way" from the most serious attack on our democracy is more than 150 years?

. Really? We still talk about Nixon’s crimes. Movies are made about presidents and past world leaders. I listen to true crime podcasts that cover lesser crimes. Are you amazed at all of that? Possible high crimes committed by a President is incredibly big news and will be discussed for decades.

True, but we do NOT talk about all the deaths associated with the Clintons. That is hush hush.

Surely, you do not expect us to believe that.

The "continue being a constitutional republic" blather is shown to be phony by the fact that the left-wing opposition to the 2016 election results, from "DAY ONE" of the Trump administration--indeed from before Inauguration Day--was calling him illegitimate and vowing to do whatever it took to get him out of office.

It is not possible, therefore, to be alarmed at any decisions made by that administration before any were made.

It was in direct response to a whataboutism.

I can't help you if you don't understand the historical similarities between the actions of both Nixon and Trump to stay in power.....yea, let's talk about Clinton's alleged crimes instead. LOL

Not very often, though. Not if we're to be really candid about this.

But Trump is the permanent fixation of the liberals and socialists. He is the 'tried and true' whipping boy of the political left and about all that they can say to divert attention from the current administration's terrible record.
