  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Who practices the Jesus Prayer regularly?

I use it regularly although I do not use a chotki, count reps etc. Our retired parish priest had told us a safe way to practice it was to pray the Jesus Prayer a few times alongside our general prayers or when doing general chores etc.

I have read a couple of in depth writings on the Jesus Prayer such as The Way of a Pilgrim ( anonymous), On the Jesus Prayer by St. Ignatius ( Brianchaninov), & The Art of Prayer ( an Orthodox Anthology). I found these to be inspirational, influential, informative etc. but say the prayer as our parish priest had suggested.

Personally, I also apply the Jesus Prayer as an intercession, “have mercy on us”. I think intercessory prayer alongside penitent prayer is open for more exploration.

We sing this version in a shortened form with our choir (mixed voices) in English

We often sing this during Priest’s Communion. And I find that it’s often in my head during the day. I pray the Jesus prayer off and on but I don’t have a particular rule about it. I like to pray it while driving.

Yes, I use a prayer rope I got from a monastery, and say it most days. I strive to say it everyday. I have a small prayer rule given by Father, and find it's easiest to find time in the car, or after work in the evenings.

Rather personal, but I found it helped me with anxiety that I experienced after the death of a close family member as well.

Interesting that you mention that, because one of the reasons I've been reciting the prayer recently is to address anxiety issues. It helps me as well, by keeping my focus on prayer and not letting my mind wander into anxious thinking patterns.

I recite the Jesus Prayer whenever I remember to which is sadly not very often. I use a prayer rope when I can, sometimes I just recite it without.

Question: do you guys recite it aloud, or just repeat it in your thoughts?

The Jesus Prayer is how I was introduced to Orthodox Christianity. When covid first hit last year I read a monk advise it while walking in nature for depression so I started doing that and it really helped. I don’t think his advice was necessarily meant for just anyone but in my state at the time I just started and kept it up! Now a year later I’m officially a catechumen and have continued it daily. I have a prayer rope but I also silently pray it while doing daily activities and notice I automatically start reciting it when walking and driving. One time I even woke up to it!

Part of my interest in getting a Chotki/Komboskini is to encourage me to remember. Every time I touch it I'll remember.

My one piece of advice would be to avoid getting one from Amazon! When I was first starting out in Orthodoxy I had no idea what I was doing or where to go to get such things, so I looked on there and saw a prayer rope advertised as having 100 knots, it actually has 106 or so and the beads are very cheap, it clearly wasn't made with care or attention! Order one from a monastery if you can!

It depends where you are based. I ordered on from St. Paisius monastery but it was expensive to get it shipped to the UK

I'm in the midwest USA. I know some monasteries in America fabricate them, I'll have to search around and see what's what. Are any of you familiar with the 'Ancient Faith Store' site:

I have heard some of their podcasts and have some books published by them, I'd say they are probably legit.
