New GOP efforts to make it harder to vote

Sorry. It's challenging to stay non-sarcastic when Republicans have introduced more than 250 similar measures in 43 states to restrict one of our most basic rights.

Do Republicans fear democracy?

Of course they do.

They have chosen a narrow base, compared to what the leaders of their party wanted in 2014. Gone is the appeal toward minorities, and in is the fear of the "other".

Their base of rural older whites is becoming a smaller and smaller percentage of the voters, so they need to bring out a higher and higher percentage of their base, while reducing the Democratic percentage coming out to vote.

As we see, states have moved over the past few election cycles. VA, NM and NV are now blue states. AZ is purple and moving to blue. The battlegrounds over the next couple cycles are TX, NC and GA. For 2022 and 2024, the strategy is to have the Republican legislators reduce the number of Democratic voters, and to control the voting and certification process.

It is critical for them to regain AZ and GA. Then, they will be back to the 2016 strategy of needing to win MI, WI and PA.

Florida Republicans, who have repeatedly acknowledged that their state ran a successful and secure 2020 election, said the bill would provide "guardrails" to prevent anyone from "gaming the system" in the future.

In signing the bill during an appearance on "Fox & Friends," the Florida Republican highlighted provisions of the bill including stricter voter ID requirements for voting by mail, creating limits on who can pick up and return a voter's ballot, and banning private funding for elections.

Some of the restrictions created by the bill, Senate Bill 90, also include expanding partisan observation power during ballot tabulation and creating additional restrictions for drop box use.

The bill is part of a Republican-led effort nationwide to restrict voting access at the state level in the wake of record turnout in last November's elections. A tally by the left-leaning Brennan Center for Justice at New York University found that 361 bills with provisions that restrict voting had been introduced in 47 states as of March 24.

There's been some speculation that some parts of this bill may backfire. People in nursing homes and seniors in general are more likely to vote by mail, and they tend to skew Republican.

No, a limiting of the ability to vote is always a loss.

I know this may seem odd for those in the RNC but not every political party is craven enough for power that they will be happy to see people lose their ability to vote if it means they have a better chance to win an election.

Unfortunately this is limiting legal voting. Those who are confined to a nursing homes shouldn’t have more road blocks thrown in their pursuit of participating in our government.

Voter Fraud is inconsequential and does not change election outcomes. Never has, never will.

Let us say that you reduce the black vote and total vote by 500,000. The illegal vote is also reduced by a few hundred.

The Texas governor offered a million dollars for anyone who could demonstrate an illegal vote. The only taker was a northern governor who did find 3 illegal ballots, all for Trump.

The attempt in so many states is straightforward: to reduce the number of black votes. This effort may have intended consequences, as on would expect from any Trump effort.
