Biden has called for unity. What are we to unify around, and why?

Unify around facts and science, because we are all subject to the same laws of nature.

Nevertheless, that was the opportunity for Trump to rally the nation to defeat the disease. Instead, well, we all know what he did and it's a shame.
Jesus says a nation divided against itself cannot stand. What if the division is part of his judgment along with the plague?

It's irrelevant since the basis of American governance is not bound to Christian principles, it's bound to the Constitution.

What if it's not? What if it's up to us to achieve unity?

In your opinion, what would it take from Democrats for the Right to regard them as fellow citizens who they could work with?

Well, considering that he is also giving speeches calling conservatives white supremacists, it seems that we are supposed to unify around pushing the left agenda.

Would you please post some sources that will validate your statement? Thanks.

[STAFF EDITED DELETED QUOTE]

"Believing what you want to believe", what is emotionally appealing vs. what is factual or verifiable, is exactly why a bunch of people stormed the Capitol recently.

Emotionally appealing rhetoric is the essence of "Feels are realz". It is also the woof and waft of conservative Evangelical religion. So it's not hard to find why the usual suspects would resist calls for less emotionally charged rhetoric and more focus on facts.

The Republican Party doesn’t deserve unity, and the Democrats are fools for offering it time after time. It was exactly what Obama tried when he was first elected and his reward was 8 years of obstruction, abuse and increasing extremism. The Democrats should play Republicans at their own game and do whatever is necessary. The idea that Republican voters are just one handshake away from moving back to reasonable thought was blown away when Trump got over 70,000,000 votes.

Likely true, unfortunately.

Many on the center left, the so-called liberals, do not understand the Right, especially the Religious Right, and make false presumptions about their character. How could they understand? Most of them live in ivory towers far remove from those people. It's easy to be concialiatory when it has no personal consequences to you.

Sadly the same is true for both sides. The Democrats needed a Bernie who could unite the working class from both parties and make the ivory tower liberals and the religious right an irrelevance for the period of that administration. Unfortunately they chose the same old centrist pick, who will have the backing of moderates, keep the working class divided and achieve very little.

Well, I don't consider that the worst thing, but I am a bit of a political independent now days. I just think American liberals aren't really clued into the real mindset of the Religious Right, or how dangerous it is. There is no possible reconciliation with a mindset that engages in virtual jihad.

Covid has divided the nation. WWI and WWII unified it.
I remember Dick Cavitt interviewing Groucho Marx who said that he and his brothers were billed as German comedians until ‘17 when (due to rather severe anti-German sentiments at the time) got billed as “Yiddish comedians”.

George Takei spent three years in Roosevelt’s “internment camps”.

America has always “needed” internal “enemies”.

Biden has called for unity. What are we to unify around, and why?
Unify around a successful approach to beating the pandemic - why? In order to save lives and get the lockdowns over and done and return to normal.

Unify around getting a thriving economy - why? a successful economy is good for all
Unify around getting medical care sorted - why? Because it is a disaster at the moment, very expensive and some people are uninsured.
Unify around getting trust in the Justice system and the FBI and CIA and other politically independent institutios, why- because this distrust creates massive division, animosity, fear, anger...

I'm not sure how agreement on a common set of facts, or around science, is supposed to produce social or political unity.
Its more of a bare minimum pre-requisite. A good start.

I dont expect, or even want, a total unity of opinion. But it would be really nice if large segments of the country werent drifting off into the thrall of anti-reality cult movements.

Lol. It is. So much for that unity.
No, it's an important point. It is not necessary to reject the science of human psychosexuality in order to disagree with public policy based on it. Homosexual activity, for example, remains a Christian sin regardless of what science may determine about its nature and origins.
