I'm not much of a gambler, but if I had to place a bet, I'd bet on no. Yet, that opportunity does exist.

As a lifelong Republican, I'd like to see the Republican Party eventually redeem itself and find its moral compass again. I want it to regain its integrity. I don't want it to be sacrificed and die on the altar of Trumpism. I want it to be completely free from the clutches of Trump and his Yes-man followers.

I’m skeptical that any serious shift will happen inside a generation. Even a lot of what passes for “mainstream” conservative thought is built on kooky ideas that have been discarded by professionals: their tax cut ideas don’t work; their small government mantra is mindlessly dogmatic; they deny climate change; they don’t know how to push forward towards a future economy; their austere attitudes towards public education and social services just make inequality worse; they perpetually drag their heels and bury their heads in the sand regarding issues of bigotry and discrimination, as well as gun violence. I could go on, but there’s a reason that the technocratic center skews Democrat these days. Republicans just gave up on the idea of basing their ideas in facts and evidence (assuming they ever did so in the first place). The sort of wholesale shift in ideology that Republicans would need to experience to get back to the real world is not something that happens quickly.
