It does not hurt to be involved in all of the steps. What is a shock to some is seeing what is behind where one's food comes from for the first time. A small example. When I was chopping some vegetables I grossed out a girl because one dropped, I cleaned it again in the sink and added it to the pot. She thought that it was "dirty" because it hit the floor with no knowledge at all of how vegetables are grown. The "dirt" from the kitchen floor that is quickly washed off is nothing compared to the "dirt" that they were grown in. Especially if one buys organic.
