A lot of people think of the post war era as the best years to live in the US, a relentlessly growing economy, a land both of opportunity and of equality, of distributed wealth.
In 1946 the Employment Act had been passed and it laid responsibility to supply employment on the Federal Government, with an eye on employment for military personnel returning from WW2, but to everyone, mainly to white males and veterans.
That economic system is known as Democratic Socialism. Pretty much everyone could afford housing, healthcare, fuel, and all the basics, and there was the growth of the suburbs designed to increase demand to keep up with production.
A lot of older people look back at the post war era fondly, yet reject all the things that made it what it was.
