  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Check out this doosey:

2 Kings 20:11 And Isaiah the prophet cried unto the LORD: and he brought the shadow ten degrees backward, by which it had gone down in the dial of Ahaz.

Not only did the earth suddenly stop, but it was suddenly put into reverse!

People soup!

Miracles can put an end to even the toughest debates! :)

Invoking them does invalidate the whole notion of evidence as a means to test claims.

The rotation of the earth was stopped long enough for Joshua to win the battle.

The sun (and moon) standing still are references from the point of the observer.

It's basic physics.
Planet Earth rotates approx 10,000 mph. What do you think the effect momentum would have, if the entire planet came to a screeching halt from 10,000mph to 0? Especially when you consider 2/3 of the Earth surface is water?

It would be a mess, wouldn't it?

With an omnipotent supreme being doing it, no effect at all. I mean, we're talking about stopping the Earth's rotation in the first place. If one accepts that idea, then one should be willing to accept the additional necessary details.

I was on another forum, and had this issue unresolved. Someone suggested that Joshua, and the miracle of the sun standing still was only possible in a merged world. I said it was merely a local intervention of the spiritual, of earth, and the moon. But is this impossible? I asked if perhaps the axis of the earth may have been changed, to make it so the day lasted longer. Anyone able to weigh in here?

Here is something I found on google.
"Donald Patten and his colleagues believe that the planet Mars passed by Earth in an unusually close orbit that caused the Earth to tilt on its axis (1973, pp. 172-198). Viewed from the right geographical location, the Sun actually would hang in the sky longer than normal." http://www.apologeticspress.org/articles/2189

Now, personally, I never considered mars as what did it, but what about the idea in general?
God can do the impossible. That is, not only amazing things that are very unlikely, but also things physics does not allow to happen on their own.

He doesn't need to use physics, or at least not any physics that we understand and know of so far.

Why think so? Because He is the creator of this physics we have. Ergo, He can alter it at will.

So, though it's interesting to speculate just using merely basic physics we know, I think instead this wasn't physics we know.

We don't know a way to cancel Earth's angular momentum, or to alter time, etc.

That is correct.

We call those things: miracles.

Yes, endlessly (ok, not endlessly, but at least quite a few times :) ), I've said to people that they don't get exactly what others are saying pretty often, and end up arguing when they already agree.

Only in that one place? How come nobody else noticed these miracles? The sun stands still for a day or goes backwards and the only people to take note are Hebrew storytellers? What happened in Egypt? Or Babylon? We know they were keeping records because that's how so much "biblical history" is corroborated, but no mention of these extraordinary events.

Let me guess - selective memory is all part of the miracle.....

The rotational speed at the equator is 1,000 mph not 10,000 mph but your point is well taken.

I don't have to guess -- in scripture it's very explicit that God wants those who will trust him before seeing proof, called "faith", and therefore all easy proof is removed, so as to allow faith to happen. Thus we can surmise that God is able to test then which people can trust Him in a truly full loving way. Like you'd need for an eternal relationship. It's quite logical actually.

God makes the sun stand still. The story is written down about 900 years later by (surprise!) a highly biased author. No other culture anywhere in the world has any record of the event. That's ignoring the fact that the long day was provided so that Joshua and his army could murder more people. For a God who claims he wants us all to love him, he relies an awful lot on wonton violence and deceit. Please explain how that is logical.

I would like to know more about this wonton violence. How are the wontons (a Chinese cuisine dumpling, often served in soup) actually used? Are they thrown? Forced down people's throats? Used to damage property? Members of Christian Forums have a right to know!

If we are on a blue marble spinning around a ball of fire, while being hurdled through nothingness... Highly unlikely.

How do we expect to believe what God is telling us, when we ourselves, pick and choose what we want to believe? Fuzzy math, not withstanding.
