We can put high school kids to work as well.

I don't know what kind of privileged life you led but a LOT of us worked in high school.

So you do believe that compulsory community service is slave labor. You've made my point.

I see no problem with community service in lieu of fines or jail but that's pretty limited. And really shouldn't be the main way we get most things done.

And yet they keep coming.

Despite the PResident of the United States aligning himself with neo-nazis, calling the undocumented "rapists" and generally telling us he is, himself, a virulent bigot who has special dislike for people of color.

yes. It is a very strong message that "poverty is horrible".

There actually is certainty in life

Then I guess I wasted all the time learning statistics and probability?

Everyone is pretty much responsible for the certainty or uncertainty in their lives.

Not really.

And you think that people who took over hotels and even government buildings this past week, who destroyed memorials to Christopher Columbus and Abraham Lincoln (!), would allow that alternative??
That’s not really my question. There’s always going to be some risk of vandalism wherever they are, at any time.

Lincoln and Columbus are very different representations of history than Confederate soldiers and Generals who supported and fought for slavery in the South. Most of the Confederate monuments were erected to support Segregation and Jim Crow sympathies. Destroying those monuments is reasonable and wise. Just because there is a minority on the left that wants to take down all monuments, it does not follow that the idea is widespread and it will ever happen. Keep in mind, there are people on the far right who would be happy to publicly celebrate open forms of racism.

Not really.
OWG is not talking about training cognitive skills as the rest of us are in this off-topic sub-conversation. He's talking about the "work ethic" or some variation of the theme, which is really all he ever talks about. :)

You may have missed the point there. The people who have vandalized and torn down all sorts of monuments lately are not particularly interested in assessing the many pros and cons of the character and history of the person who is being memorialized.

Just about anything from American history is on their "to do" list.

This thread should be deleted--no-one can stay on topic--talk about a failure of thinking and education.
Oh, I don't know. You could be right, but on the other hand this thread could be a good illustration of what happens when bigotry dominates. Some want to talk about the bigotry, and others want to change the subject.
I'm just sayin. . .

The black community is more subservient to the left than to the right (among other things.)
You may want to reconsider the idea of blacks being"subservient" to the left. That demeans the fact that they disagree with you in large numbers. Maybe they have strong convictions based on experience and evidence and are not actually blindly following the media. What makes you so confident that you are not subservient to the politics and media on the right?

I kinda figured. But it's ironic because in the USA today you can be someone with the best work ethic imaginable and still fail because industry doesn't really care about giving people a chance. I've known complete mess-ups who meandered into higher level management positions and I've also known geniuses whom management never recognized or even antagonized.

This whole "I got where I am through super hard work and those who fail to achieve greatness are totally responsible for their own failure" mythos in America is one of the problems we have.

If ONLY we were a "meritocracy"...but we haven't been that maybe ever, but certainly not within my professional career!

(Not that I'm saying I should be higher up the chain...in my case my general incompetence keeps me comfortably within the ranks of those "Striving for Mediocrity". I get paid more than I should but not as much as I'd like.)

By the way, for those who worry about 'forgetting history', what's wrong the suggestion of putting stuff like this in a museum, or creating one to house them as part of a larger centralized Civil War tribute?

Better hurry.

Well, you found a so-called lifelong conservative Republican who is actually a conflicted Republican endeavoring to be seen as in step with the "me too" Republicans of the long distant past. But no, they don't run the party anymore. And Lincoln, Wendell Wilkie, and Nelson Rockefeller are deceased.

There's nothing "perceptive" about this tome. Most of his editorials are essentially the same.

And it was published in a newspaper that's known for its very partisan editorializing.

As Scott Galupo, writing in US News and World Report, said of Gerson's struggle to find himself...

"It’s a shame for Gerson that America’s binary party system doesn’t have room for something along the lines of Europe’s Christian Democrats. He and former Gov. Mike Huckabee would feel right at home in such a party.

"For better or worse, we have just two parties—and Gerson has very painfully shoehorned himself into one of them."

The most ancient, and feeblest response. When you don't like the message, attack the messenger.

Then I guess I wasted all the time learning statistics and probability?

Different career paths have different probabilities for success. Mine has virtually a 100 percent chance for a person of average skills and education. My career has been in the food business, and the residential rental property business. Not glamorous but very secure and predictable.
