If your husband watches inappropriate content, is that a form of adultery where the wife can divorce her husband?
Yes, but divorce is messy (and that marriage might still be saved).
p.s. I made a typo, the title is if 'your' husband (I don't have one)..

Matthew 5: 27-28 says the will to commit adultery is equivalent to the act, so yes. However, as with the woman caught in Adultery, who are we to cast the first stone? I don't think it immediately should be grounds for divorce, either.

The short answer is no.

The main point of Jesus' teaching is to preserve marriages, not to end them.

Anyone who is concerned about such an issue had better not marry because there is a vast array of offenses they should endure in order to preserve their marriage. Single people should just enjoy being single rather than look for reasons for divorce aforehand.

I think it’s pretty clear that inappropriate contenteia (the Greek word used in the divorce exception)is referring to sexual relations. If the will to commit adultery were equivalent to the act regarding divorce than any woman could divorce her husband at any time, as no man can live a life without a lustful thought. I don’t think I’ve read any significant commentary that characterized lustful thoughts as grounds for a biblical divorce. While viewing inappropriate contentography is certainly grounds for separation I don’t believe a divorce in those cases is scripturally justified. Although unrepentant and repeated abuse of inappropriate contentography would obviously be a horrible thing for any person.

According to Lord Jesus, it is adultery. If it blatant, degrades the woman and shows contempt for the relationship, I don't believe its a real marriage anyway. But the woman needs to be absolutely sure in her conscience that she wants out for the right reason.

Jesus does say that if a guy looks with lust for a woman, he already has committed adultery. So, I guess you could claim this means it is ok to divorce the guy.

But I think that is good, to understand that Jesus taught this in order to prevent divorce.

Plus . . . how many times do we cheat on Jesus, by sinning, yet He our Groom does not just dump us? What does Jesus say about forgiving?

Possibly, you need to talk and ask about this in a way that is personal for you . . . in the Christian Advice forum. Because we have very kind and caring and wise people there who might not come to talk about things in this theology place.

Beware those who say "according to Jesus" as Jesus only permitted men to divorce their unfaithful wives.

Jesus and the OT law did not allow women to divorce men, even unfaithful ones. As far as I can tell, the NT does not directly change this either.

You can only argue that in Christ there is neither male nor female, so everyone must follow the same standard. I am OK with women's divorce based on that principle.

Already remember that Jesus wants less divorce because he hates it.

The verses often are taken out of context. They are taken as literal rather than a parable/example. The example being that if someone really wants to divorce, they will use any reason to do so no matter how much they are told its not valid. Hence the men kept coming up with new reasons every day in hopes something would work.

Divorced is not allowed for any reason. God even says He hates divorce. It goes to show how in hard matters we still tend to disobey God. Heck in my case I've looked at inappropriate content. I don't do it for fun and I don't enjoy it when I succumb to the urge. I hate it, I cry. But I don't make an excuse for looking. God says its a sin and thus it is. Same with divorce.

Where Jesus says, "except for fornication" . . . it does not seem He says "except for adultery". And there was such a thing as a woman pretending to be a virgin in order to fool a guy into marrying her. Then he finds out she was on purpose tricking him. So, the grounds for divorce, really, could be her deliberate betraying of his trust.

Does watching inappropriate content or going to strip clubs qualify as adultery? I would say technically "Yes," given that Jesus said anyone who lusts after another has committed adultery in their heart. However -- even though God has made allowances for divorce in cases of adultery or abandonment, His heart is always for reconciliation whenever possible. So just because a spouse cheats doesn't automatically mean the couple should divorce. In many cases, they do. But, God's desire would be for repentance, restoration, and reconciliation whenever possible. But if it's not possible, and the trust can't be restored, He allows for divorce.

Adultery is to have sex with someone else than persons’ own spouse. And it is enough if person has done it in his mind only. Seeing inappropriate content doesn’t necessary mean that one has done adultery. It may be, but it is not necessary so. That is why I think it would be too hasty to divorce because of that. This doesn’t mean it is ok to watch inappropriate content.

If God opened the door to divorce so that "thought crime" was valid ground for divorce -- the divorce rate among Christians would be far higher than for non-Christians.

All sin is evil as Christ point out in Matthew 5 and that includes sins that are merely thoughts.

But adding the sin of divorce to it - is only allowed in extreme cases where one sin is better than a worse sin.

A person guilty of the highest form of adultery is not merely attracted to someone else - they actually form a real relationship with that other person. And that other person -- with them in return. They even place the health of their spouse at risk.

The marriage does not often survive such invasive damage.

inappropriate content is every bit the sin that Christ says it is in Matthew 5 - no question about it.
(BTW - both men and women "have thoughts" - that their spouse might not approve of if they knew about them)

But Christ does not allow thought crime to form the basis for the sin of divorce which God says "he hates". only the most egregious form of the sin of adultery (that is to say - doing it with another person in real life) can justify engaging in the sin of divorce which God hates. But you will lose your salvation over either form of the sin of adultery if you do not fully embrace the gospel and through the power of the Holy Spirit (as we see in Romans 8:4-11) walk in real-life obedience keeping your mind fixed on Christ - setting aside the sin that does so easily entrap Heb 12:1-6

Love God and keep His Commandments - Ex 20:6 ,John 14:15 ,1 John 5:2-3
