While reading lineage in Genesis chapter 10, we come across a man named Peleg. This is what it says(in 3 different versions):

1.
“To Eber were born two sons: the name of one was Peleg, for in his days the earth was divided; and his brother’s name was Joktan.”
‭‭Genesis‬ ‭10:25‬ ‭NKJV

2.
“To Eber were born two sons: the name of the one was Peleg, for in his days the earth was divided, and his brother's name was Joktan.”
‭‭Genesis‬ ‭10:25‬ ‭ESV‬‬

3.
“To Eber were born two sons: the name of the one was Peleg, for in his days the earth was divided, and his brother's name was Joktan.”
‭‭Genesis‬ ‭10:25‬ ‭NRSV-CI‬‬

In his days the Earth was divided. Some may say that this alludes to nations at war, but, it would have said “the nations were divided” but it doestnt. This is very interesting and lead me to think of “Pangea” if you are unfamiliar, scientists have a theory that at a point in history all of the continents were connected and then due to the shifting of plates and continental drift, the continents are now separated.

Does this verse back up scientists theories? Here are a few other verses that relate or tie in to this subject:

“When the Most High apportioned the nations, when he divided humankind, he fixed the boundaries of the peoples according to the number of the gods;”
‭‭Deuteronomy‬ ‭32:8‬ ‭NRSV-CI‬‬

“To Eber were born two sons: the name of one was Peleg, for in his days the earth was divided; and his brother’s name was Joktan.”
‭‭I Chronicles‬ ‭1:19‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

What do you guys think?

Hi zachm,

I think that's certainly a possibility. Most YEC believers do believe that the continents were separated apart during the great flood. There really isn't any indication in the Scriptures that such was the case. But it was a cataclysmic time upon the earth where we can imagine that such a thing would happen. The Scriptures do seem to be clear that in the beginning there was only one mass of land upon the earth. Then we are told of this great flood in which all the springs of the deep opened up and we just have this picture in our minds of the land mass being in great turmoil and upheaval. A time in which it is quite easy to imagine that such a cataclysm would have caused some great separation of the single land mass, and the movements of these great masses of land across the face of the globe.

However, it has often been questioned how mankind got to be living in Australia and Japan and the Americas and all of the other various continent and island land masses upon the earth, if it divided during the flood when the Scriptures tell us that no one was alive except for Noah and his immediate family. I certainly find that if the pangea didn't happen until several generations after the flood, that would provide a reasonable explanation as to why mankind has been found scattered about as it is.

Such an idea certainly brings up imaginative wondering as to what it must have been like living upon the earth in those days with the earth apparently making great shifts of continental land masses.

God bless,
In Christ, ted

Homo sapiens actually walked across much of the planet . Prehistoric people certainly knew how to make boats and that’s how islands were colonised .the sea levels were lower during the ice ages and land was exposed that’s under the ocean now .

Pangea happened millions of years before humans evolved . So as cute as Pangea sounds as a Old Testament story line , it’s fiction

Hi brightmoon,

Well, just so it's understood that such a scenario is only possible if the earth is millions of years old. Personally, I haven't yet been convinced that it is.

So where does the Bible say that we evolved from apes? I see humans made separately.

. And you be wrong . Ape anatomy and DNA is human anatomy and DNA . Linnaeus figured that out in the 1700s when he put humans in Primates with the monkeys and dared his professional colleagues to find any anatomical reason the humans shouldn’t be there. Humans are still classified as Primates to this day. After we got the DNA from the chimp genome project (which was done in the 90s soon after the human genome) , scientists took one look and retired the former great ape family name Pongidae because humans are great apes . Humans and the other apes are in family Hominidae

btw humans never evolved out of the great ape lineage . That’s like saying you’re in a completely different lineage than your grandpa

I’ve been fascinated with geology since I was a kid. The earth being old is fairly obvious if you know where to look and you understand what you’re looking at . I can see terminal moraines from melting glaciers at the end of the ice age near my neighborhood. They form low hills which are a pain to run up when you’re trying to catch a bus ;). Riding on the local highways I can see schists glitter where they cut through the rock . Schists are metamorphic rocks the form under a lot of heat and pressure . Yet they’re on the surface . The rocks over the schists have been eroded away and that takes a lot of time certainly much more than several thousand years

I’m on the east coast. You can also look at the Appalachian mountains. They’re old and worn down . The North America bumped into Africa and Europe to form them. Just measure the Atlantic at the narrowest point and divide that by 3 inches a year . Which is about the average of how fast those plates moved

Yes, stick with Scripture, and Yahweh's Spirit of Truth, and the Good Shepherd Jesus: the Ekklesia hear His Voice, and follow Him; another voice they /we/ will not follow.....

Hi brightmoon,

I will certainly agree that's a good theory.

"it’s fiction" suggests it is outright untrue Definition of FICTION.

Any of the words below, and many more, could have been chosen:

Definition of ALLEGORY

Definition of PARABLE

Definition of POETRY

Definition of MYTH

and then this:

"We believe in (Romans 10:8-10; 1John 4:15)
ONE God, (Deuteronomy 6:4, Ephesians 4:6)
the Father (Matthew 6:9)
Almighty, (Exodus 6:3)
Maker of Heaven and Earth,(Genesis 1:1)

becomes much easier to explain.

I’m not one of those who thinks that ignorance about nature = good person . I just think it means you’re scientifically illiterate and proud of it.

A Physicist with 2 PhD’s who I personally know, who works in mainstream research at a local University to me, is "scientifically illiterate"? I believe it would be a bit rude of me to agree with you about that.

scientific theories are based on facts . If you have no facts then you’ve got no theory
