Is it Jehovah or Yahweh(Revealed to Moses in the burning bush) Why is the name of God replaced with LORD? Is the name of God Jesus Christ?
I think that this is a very good question. In fact a few years ago, I did a sermon about this.
Here is the short and simple version:
1. In the Old Testament, God told Moses that his name, when converted into English letters was Yahweh, which can be translated in a number of ways, such as "I am" or even "I will be what I will be".
2. The Jews, however, felt that God's name was too holy for people to speak aloud, so when reading "Yahweh, they would pronounce the Hebrew word for Lord, "Adonai".
For example, Isaiah 42:
is written as "I am Yahweh, that is My name; I will not give My glory to another, or My praise to idols"
but it is read aloud as "I am Adonai, that is My name; I will not give My glory to another, or My praise to idols".
3. Unfortunately, in order to save time and space, vowels were not written down only consonants. Thus Yahweh became written as YHWH. Later scribes added vowel accents on top of the consonants to remind people how to say the words. But specifically for YHWH, they used the vowels for Adonai, to remind people how to speak scripture without actually saying the holy name.
4. Later, when translating the Bible into English, they did not know about the Yahweh/Adonai combination and thus mistakenly translated YHWH as Jehovah. When modern scholars discovered their error, they switched the translations from Jehovah to Yahweh.
5. Why, then, does the English Bible use LORD instead of Yahweh or "I am" for God's name. The reason is that the translators decided to maintain the Jewish tradition of avoiding the direct use of God's name and have substituted Lord instead. The difference is that Hebrew readers would know the real name of God, Yahweh, (even if they did not say it aloud) while English readers would only know the safe substitute, LORD.
6. There is no biblical justification for translating Yahweh into LORD and this used to bother me. But I have come to realize that there is no magical power in any particular name of God. What counts is an obedient relationship with God.
