  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

"Come, let us sing joyfully to the Lord;
cry out to the rock of our salvation." --Psalm 95

I wanted to share this in this thread, rather than in the Christian Music section, because I'm interested in a discussion about hymns in different genres.

Below are a few hard rock songs; one is a hymn many Catholics will recognize, and the other is somewhat of a Catholic apologetics song. Regardless of denomination, what do you all think about Christian music in hard rock? Is it okay to listen to/make? Is it okay in Church services? How can this help us fulfill the Great Commission? Is it reverent? Is it okay to make Christian music that defends a certain denomination? Take this discussion in whatever direction you like, I'm sure some people have interesting viewpoints to share.

May God bless us all with good music & discussion!

I love hymns set to heavy rock music. It's my all-time favorite genre.

How can this help us fulfill the Great Commission?

I think there is something to be said for having Christian content in music that is not usually associated with being "Christian." It may be the only way someone hears the good news. The one example that comes to mind is Black Sabbath's song "After Forever." The content is clearly Christian. When I was a kid and this was the only music I listened to, this song made me think twice about Christianity. I have to be honest, this one song makes Ozzy look more evangelical than Jimmy Swaggart ever gave him credit for. But, then again, Swaggart probably didn't listen to what Ozzy was saying.

Have you ever thought about your soul can it be saved?
Or perhaps you think that when you are dead,
You just stay in your grave.
Is God just a thought within your head,
Or is he a part of you?
Is Christ just a name that you read in a book
When you were at school?

When you think about death do you lose your breath,
Or do you keep your cool?
Would you like to see the Pope on the end of a rope,
Do you think he's a fool?
Well I have seen the truth, yes I've seen the light,
And I've changed my ways.
And I'll be prepared when you're lonely and scared
At the end of our days.

Could it be you're afraid of what your friends might say
When you believe in God above?
They should realize before they criticize
That God is the only way to love.

Is your mind so small that you have to fall
In with the pack wherever they run?
Will you still sneer when death is near
And say they may as well worship the sun?

I think it was true it was people like you that crucified Christ.
I think it is sad the opinion you had was the only one voiced.
Will you be so sure when your day is near, say you don't believe?
You had the chance but you turned it down, now you can't retrieve.

Perhaps you'll think before you say that God is dead and gone.
Open your eyes,
Just realize that he's the one.
The only one who can save you now from all this sin and hate.
Or will you still jeer at all you hear?
Yes, I think it's too late.

it has no place in a house of God. it is blasphemous. the devil has inflitrated the church gradually until it came to this. it is not worship. it's a mockery.

Are you Church of Christ?

My grandparents on my mother's side were Church of Christ, and so all the hymns were sung (quite well too) by the entire congregation, acapella.

While I don't think scripture requires us have no instruments, I do enjoy hearing great acapella singing.

God made us with unique gifts, each and every one.

1 Praise the Lord.
Praise God in his sanctuary;
praise him in his mighty heavens.

2 Praise him for his acts of power;
praise him for his surpassing greatness.

3 Praise him with the sounding of the trumpet,
praise him with the harp and lyre,

4 praise him with timbrel and dancing,
praise him with the strings and pipe,

5 praise him with the clash of cymbals,
praise him with resounding cymbals.

6 Let everything that has breath praise the Lord.
Praise the Lord.
Psalm 150 NIV

Secular rock music doesn't glorify God, it is literally the devil's work. Look it up. Rock hymns are a perversion of actual hymns and don't glorify God, either.

That's generally true -- secular rock often just celebrates the flesh.

Of course, Christian rock isn't secular.

There was a good thread on this a year or 2 back. Lemme see if I can find it, as it has quite a bit of Christian rock in it (including the 'hard rock' style of course).

While the harder rock isn't what I search for myself, as I don't have a music style I prefer much over the others, except that it include some percussion, as in Psalm 150 just above, here's one song that shows up in that kind of thread:

lyric:
I lie here paralytic
Inside this soul
Screaming for you till
My throat is numb
I wanna break out
I need a way out
I don't believe that it's gonna be this way
The worst is
The waiting
In this world I'm suffocating
Feel Your presence
Filling up my lungs with oxygen
I take You in
I've died
Rebirthing now
I wanna live forever
Wanna live for You and me
(Breathe for the first time now
I came alive somehow)
Rebirithing now
I wanna live my life
Wanna give You everything
(Breathe for the first time now
I came alive somehow)
Right now
Right now
I lie here lifeless
In this cocoon
Shedding the skin 'cause
I'm ready to
I wanna break out
I found a way out
I don't believe that it's gonna be this way
The worst is
The waiting
In this world I'm suffocating
Feel Your presence
Filling up my lungs with oxygen
I take You in
I've died
Rebirthing now
I wanna live forever
Wanna live for You and me
(Breathe for the first time now
I came alive somehow)
Rebirithing now
I wanna live my life
Wanna give You everything
(Breathe for the first time now
I came alive somehow)
Tell me when I'm gonna live again
Tell me when I'm gonna breathe you in
Tell me when I'm gonna feel inside
Tell me when I'm gonna feel alive
Tell me when I'm gonna live again
Tell me when this fear will end
Tell me when I'm gonna feel inside
Tell me when I'll feel alive
Rebirthing now
I wanna live forever
Wanna live for You and me
(Breathe for the first time now
I came alive somehow)
Rebirithing now
I wanna live my life
Wanna give You everything
(Breathe for the first time now
I came alive somehow)
right now!
(I came alive somehow) right now!
(I came alive somehow)

Wow, there are so many threads and also such a huge number of Christian rock and metal bands that I can't even find the ones we had in that thread a few years back. There's so many. But I just found this new song below from Flyleaf and am listening for the first time.

There are a lot of Christian metal bands trying to help the lost turn towards God.

lyric:
"I love the way that your heart breaks
With every injustice and deadly fate
Praying it all will be new
And living like it all depends on you
Here you are down on your knees again
Trying to find air to breathe again
And only surrender will help you now
I love you please see I believe again
I love that you're never satisfied
With face value wisdom and happy lies
You take what they say and go back and cry
You're so close to me that you nearly died, oh
Here you are down on your knees again
Trying to find air to breathe again
And only surrender will help you now
I love you please see and believe again
They don't have to understand you
Be still
Wait and know I understand you
Be still
Be still
Here you are down on your knees again
Trying to find air to breathe again
And only surrender will help you now
The floodgates are breaking
And pouring out
Here you are down on your knees
Trying to find air to breathe
Right where I want you to be again
I love you please see and believe again
Here you are down on your knees again
Trying to find air to breathe again
Right where I want you to be again
See and believe!"

Good morning, and thank you for your opinion; I was hoping to hear from someone who disagreed with the genre. What I would like is an explanation; why do you think that this genre is satanic? Why are good lyrics (assuming the lyrics are good) fine when used with a piano, but corrupted when used with an electric guitar? And where do you draw the line?

To me, it all seems very subjective, but I've never heard an explanation that addresses the questions I posed; please let us know!

Thank you, and may God bless us all!

Being that I actually play an electric guitar in church, I consider the fact that I can make my guitar sound very much like an electric piano. My wife complained that she could never hear me, and then our pianist switched to bass guitar, and she realized she had been hearing me all along. So...if an electric guitarist plays a hymn with his guitar set to sound like a keyboard...(you get the idea)? Incidentally, I can play Luther's hymns on electric guitar and sound very much like a pipe organ, also, but I prefer not to.

i'm methodist. but not practicing. it's gone by way of the world. it's not the instruments. it's how they are played.

it's how they are played.
So, you have a problem with one or more of the following:
  • minor chords
  • emphasis on the first and fifth notes of a chord
  • strong rhythm
  • high gain
Incidentally, the first three are found in common hymns, also. Rock music merely employs all of them consistently and together. The fourth one is simply a volume knob turned too far, causing an overloaded circuit, resulting in more overtones. The devil loves overtones, naturally, such as the overtone of condemnation among fellow believers.
