I wasn't going to touch this topic, but his sheer persistence in his error is pushing things into cray-cray town.

As Hurricane Dorian unleashed torrential rains on the Carolinas on Thursday morning, President Trump continued to push his erroneous contention from the weekend that Alabama could have been affected by the life-threatening storm.

In his first tweets of the morning, Trump insisted that what he first said in a Sunday tweet was accurate at the time and attacked the news media.

“What I said was accurate! All Fake News in order to demean!” Trump wrote.

Alabama residents! Be on the lookout for the Army Corps of Engineers cutting trees down and knocking down buildings.

Never stand between the climate change theorists and their egos, either. The fact is that, at the time of the remark, nobody knew where Dorian was headed, what her strength might be, or the impact she would have. Some models did suggest that she would cross into the Gulf of Mexico, which means that coastal Alabama could have been impacted.

Trump's press secretary (who incidentally hasn't held a press conference yet) tweeted at CNN to correct a map that had mislabeled a state.

CNN Communications:
Thanks, Stephanie. Yes, we made a mistake (which we fixed in less than 30 seconds). And now we are admitting it. You all should try it sometime.

This is almost completely untrue. At the time that Trump wrote his tweet, on September 1, the forecast and modeling clearly showed that the hurricane would turn north and follow the coast up to the Carolinas. This was not a "nobody knows" scenario. There was a zero percent chance at that time of Alabama being affected.

Now, it's true that a few days before (August 28th/29th), a some models did indicate the possibility that Dorian would head into the Gulf, but different models showed different possibilities, and models change on a daily - and even hourly - basis. You can't go off of a single model, and models from a few days before are no longer going to be accurate.

Honestly, it's not that big of a deal that Trump screwed it up. It happens - he saw the model(s) with Alabama in the projected path and thought it was worth mentioning. The concerning thing is that, rather than admitting he was wrong when corrected, he doubled down and continues to do so.

Oh Donald hasn't just pushed things into cray-cray town. They've taken up residence there.

It's not just nutty that he's doing it, it's showing reckless regard for the welfare of folks who believe him.

He’s still defending himself. Two more tweets in the last 20 minutes. He can’t let it go.

If Donald was still just the host of a tacky reality TV show we could just roll our eyes, laugh it off. He's still acting as if he's in that job when he's not, and folks are harmed on account of it.

No, that is not a fact. That is a fantasy dreamed up by Trump's fans who prefer to believe their Gilded Leader was correct than to dare double-check his claims against reality.

Trump made his initial Alabama tweet on Sunday Sep 1. The forecast from the night before clearly had the storm tracking up the east coast:

Hurricane Dorian maintains Category 4 status, potential path toward NC :: WRAL.com
